NASA awards student grant to age Mars

NASA awarded a $496,000 grant to develop a device that could determine the age of Mars.

Regina DeWitt, a research assistant to Stephen McKeever in the department of physics, was born and raised in Germany and completed her undergraduate in physics before attending Heidelburg University to study luminescent dating.

Stillwater crime rates drop during summer vacation

Despite stereotypes that crime rates are higher in the summertime, Stillwater’s crime levels are lower than during the regular school year. However, residents still need to heed safety precautions.

Stillwater tweet count highest in Oklahoma

Stillwater tweeps enjoy tweeting on Twitter.

According to a two-month study to measure Oklahoma’s Twitter population, the number of tweets per capita were highest in Stillwater compared to other Oklahoma cities. Matt Galloway, a technologist and social media enthusiast, conducted the study.

Bike thefts around campus on the rise since January

The number of bicycles reported stolen on campus has increased compared to last year.

“From January to June this year, we’ve had 41 reports of bicycles being stolen,” said Lt. Mark Shearer of the OSU police department. “These are actual thefts.”

Regents approve tuition, fee rates

It’s official: no tuition or fee increases for OSU students next year.

The Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents approved the 2009-2010 budget Friday that holds tuition rates and fees steady with 2008-2009 levels.

OSU transit provides safe place for youth

OSU Parking and Transit Services is working to make Stillwater a safer place for teenagers.

On June 1, it joined Payne County Youth Services to participate in Project Safe Place, a national organization that has been active in Stillwater since 1996, said Angie Freeny, Safe Place coordinator for PCYS.

Officer arrested

A Stillwater police officer, who worked at Stillwater Junior High, has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Louis Alvie “Buck” Morris, 48, was arrested and charged on Tuesday with two felony counts of rape by instrumentation and three counts of lewd acts with a minor child.

UCO campus goes tobacco-free in 2010

The University of Central Oklahoma moves forward in joining other Oklahoma universities that are tobacco-free, including Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma Christian University.

The tobacco ban will take effect in July 2010.

Six-legged frog finds new home

Blake Crowson, 5, is the proud owner of the six-legged frog named Ferdinand. Crowson’s grandfather found Ferdinand in a Payne County pond behind his house, which is outside of Stillwater. Crowson and his family plan to keep Ferdinand as a pet in a glass aquarium.

No injuries reported in hail storm

Severe thunderstorms brought large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain to parts of Oklahoma, authorities said.

There were no injuries reported with the storms, at least two of which prompted tornado warnings in central and east-central Oklahoma late Friday.

OSU announced Tuesday that administrators will not shake graduates’ hands as they receive their certificates.
