Sophomore Marshall Moses goes up for the ball against Grambling State. OSU shot a school record 39 3-pointers in Sunday’s 91-60 victory.
Through four games, one thing is certain about the Cowboys — they like to shoot the 3.
OSU relied on 3-point shooting early and often Sunday, defeating the Grambling State Tigers 91-60.
The Cowboys (4-0) tied a school record for made 3-pointers with 15 and set the school record for attempts with 39.
Senior guard Terrel Harris led the game in scoring with 23 points. Harris finished 4-of-9 from behind the 3-point line, doubling his 3-point attempts through the first three games.
Ford said even though 3-point shooting is a big part of the Cowboys’ style, he was surprised to see how many they attempted.
“I didn’t even realize we shot 39 of them,” Ford said. “I didn’t think we shot particularly well, but we shot a lot of them.”
In addition to Harris’ 23, James Anderson scored 22, Byron Eaton had 11 and Keiton Page and Obi Muonelo added 10 each.
Muonelo also had 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Despite the 31-point victory, Ford was not pleased with the Cowboys’ effort. He said he thought the team was lazy in the first half and grew too reliant on the 3.
“There’s a lot on the stat sheet I’m just not happy with,” Ford said. “In order for us to compete at the level we all want to compete at, we can’t give that effort, and we gotta play better.”
The Cowboys took a 13-point lead into the locker room at halftime and Ford said he and the coaching staff “put it to them pretty good” during the break.
OSU responded with a 31-4 run to begin the second period, stretching their lead from 11 to 38 less than 10 minutes into the half.
“Coach Ford, at halftime, wasn’t happy with the way we were playing,” Muonelo said. “He gave us a pretty good halftime speech. He said he wanted us to play tougher defense and not turn over the ball as much.
“We keyed in on just our intensity and our strength coming into the second half. We just got some easy looks and hit a couple shots and got going; our press got going and we looked good out there.”
The Cowboys opened the second half in a full-court press that confused the Tigers, forcing 15 turnovers in the period.
The Cowboys scored 33 points off turnovers and had 17 fast break points. The Tigers scored eight points through the first 10 minutes of the second session.
“We were just glad to get a victory,” Ford said. “I can’t say it was the best performance or the prettiest performance, especially in the first half, but I thought they played much better in the second half.”
Next up for the Cowboys is a trip to Orlando, Fla., where they will compete in the Old Spice Classic. The first game for OSU is against ninth-ranked Gonzaga on Thanksgiving at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
