Students cash in on Bedlam ticket demand

With the Bedlam game holding extra weight this year because of OU and OSU’s high national rankings, many students are attempting to make quick money by selling their tickets.

Students are selling their Bedlam football tickets for more than they paid for season tickets.

When pricing these tickets, many students start out low and end up getting a much larger offer, said Whitney Marshall, a business marketing sophomore. Marshall said she will close the bid for her ticket soon.

“I’m taking the best offer I get,” Marshall said. “I started out at $120, but people have offered me as much as $300 for the ticket.”

Students are posting tickets for sale on Facebook Marketplace, Craig’s List, eBay and local online forums.

Some students, like Drew Reo, are selling tickets because they are leaving for Thanksgiving.

“I’m going home,” said Reo, a business management junior. “I’ve only been home twice this year.”

Reo posted his ticket Sunday on Facebook Marketplace, with a starting price of $150 — what he paid for his student season tickets.

Reo said he has had four offers. He said he has also posted on a few local forums, but will most likely get the sale from Marketplace.

“Whenever I find someone who can meet with me, I’ll sell,” Reo said. “But I’ll probably lower my price if it is not sold by Monday.”

Some students are going out-of-state to celebrate Thanksgiving, like Austin Werts, a biology freshman.

“I really want to go, but I will be in Houston for Thanksgiving,” Werts said.

Werts posted his ticket on Marketplace with a starting price of $215.

“I’m selling it for $215 because I figured if people really wanted it that much, they’d pay, which is probably not very nice,” Werts said. “But it would be nice to pay off tickets and have a little extra money.”

Werts said he would sell lower than his starting price.

“I’d take an offer of $200, but I am really aiming for that price,” Werts said.

Liz Snyder, an interior design freshman, is either going home or staying here for the game but either way is selling her ticket.

“I might be sitting in the box seat with my boyfriend, if we can get those tickets from his aunt,” Snyder said. “But if not, I’ll go home to Tulsa.”

I find it interesting that the O’Colly puts this as a front page story, yet fails to even slightly mention the fact that this process is, in fact, illegal. I don’t care if they sell their tickets marked up or not, but it makes me question the O’Colly’s real journalistic worth when they fail to incorporate such a detail that is inherently linked with the subject of the story. Isn’t it a bit obvious of an aspect to include?

There is no state ban on ticket scalping. Some communities, such as Oklahoma City, have municipal ordinances banning the re-sale for profit, but Stillwater does not.

And there’s nothing illegal with putting something you own for sale on Craig’s List, eBay or similar sites, even when asking for more than the face value.

If this act is so Illegal, why havn’t stillwater police put a stop to the people selling their tickets every single football and basketball games on every corner around the stadium. Before you attack the worth of the O’Colly answer that question. everyone and their dog knows that it is illegeal. Why report the obvious.
