STILLWATER — Two days after leading the Oklahoma State men’s cross country team to its first Big 12 title, coach Dave Smith was recognized as the 2008 Big 12 Coach of the Year in a vote of his peers.
Smith guided the Cowboys to a dominate showing at the Big 12 meet, with OSU freshman German Fernandez winning the individual crown and four Cowboys placing among the top five overall finishers.
Smith is the first Oklahoma State coach to earn Big 12 Coach of the Year honors in cross country.
“This is really an award for the team,” Smith said. “We’re excited about what we have going and this is an award that shows the progress we have made as a team.”
Last year’s NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, Smith is establishing a name for himself as one of the top distance coaches in the nation.
He led the Cowboys to a third-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last year and has had the Pokes ranked No. 2 in the nation for much of this season.
Smith and the Cowboys host the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships Nov. 15 at the OSU Cross Country Course. OSU has won the regional title the past three years and in four of the past five.
