Sounds like OSU is ready to listen.
In case you didn’t know, a guy named Ben Stein spoke to a fairly crowded Wes Watkins Center on Monday evening.
Let’s face it. Ben Stein is a big name.
OSU has had several of them in the past couple of years — George W. Bush for the graduation speech, Cal Ripken Jr., Rudy Giuliani. But we’re embarrassed to admit we racked our brains trying to remember who was the “big deal” for the Speaker’s Board last year.
Let’s all say “Oh yeah” together, as we remind you it was Steven Levitt, author of “Freakonomics.”
Only one of us went to see Stein speak, and she sounded a little disappointed that he didn’t talk much about politics or offer up a meaningful life lesson.
But this got us speculating on who, in terms of both big names and unkowns, we would be inclined to come see speak. The opinions are all over the board on this one.
Apparently that’s what happens when you take seven opinionated people of different backgrounds, personalities and beliefs and put them together in a small room.
So, we came up with a list of people who would motivate us to squeeze a spot into our schedules.
Our list in no way represents the entire group and is in no particular order, they’re just ideas that were thrown out there. So if you disagree, pick a name from the list to the right to blame.
1. Jon Stewart: This is the exception to the list — we all agree we’d come for this speech. He’s that good.
2. The person who came up with Google.com: Just think, a few short years ago the word just meant a big number. Now people are Googling each other all over the place.
3. Anyone who is not a politician, not politically-minded, or has nothing to say about politics. We’d like to hear from someone who doesn’t speak to the public on a professional level.
4. Conan O’Brien: This one sparked an argument between two members, one who claims to hate the man and one who thinks he’s one of the funniest people on the planet.
5. A soldier who just came back from Iraq or a veteran from any war: Enough said.
