TV Ate My Soul

Treat yourself with Halloween episodes of ‘Buffy,’ ”Smallville’

There’s a serious issue to talk about concerning “Pushing Daisies.”

Disturbing news on the Internet cites that this wonderful show’s days are numbered, and that unlucky number happens to be 13.

The show has a 13-episode season, according to Entertainment Weekly’s Web site.

If ABC doesn’t order a full season by the time these original 13 episodes are up, “Pushing Daisies” could be, well, pushing daisies.

I can’t stress this enough, watch this show.

Combining action, humor, magic, romance and a little morbidity, this show has something for everyone.

At the very least, turn your TV to ABC on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

What else are you watching — the “Knight Rider” remake?

Meanwhile, this is the first Tuesday in three weeks that “90210” has a new episode.

I’m surprised I’ve missed the show this much.

The latest episode secured a spot for at least the rest of the season.

Even better news concerning the CW’s newest soap is the addition of Rebecca Kirshner as executive producer.

For those of you who have a life, Kirshner is a longtime veteran of the WB’s “Gilmore Girls.”

This news, reported by Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello, couldn’t make me happier.

“90210” could use some “Gilmore Girls” wit.

With all of that out of the way, I thought I would have a little Halloween TV celebration.

From your favorite characters decorating the Christmas trees to dysfunctional family Thanksgiving dinners, holiday specials rate anywhere from the very good to the terribly bad.

So, let’s talk about these good and bad specials.

First on the list is the worst Halloween special I’ve ever seen.

Coincidentally it was an episode from my favorite show.

In season five, Smallville featured a Halloween episode titled, “Thirst.”

Lana joined a sorority solely for the need of on-campus housing, and a group of vampires filled the chapter.

Lana turns into a vampire, and suddenly I hated her more.

She drank Clark’s blood and got his powers.

It was a bad deal.

Still, every year I break out my season five DVD set just to watch this delightfully terrible episode.

It’s the reason for the season.

If “Smallville’s” episode is the worst, then whose Halloween special reigns supreme?

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” has several Halloween episodes, but I think the two best are from its second and fourth seasons.

In season two’s aptly named “Halloween,” the inhabitants of Sunnydale transform into the costumes they’re wearing.

Buffy becomes a helpless princess, Xander is a military commando and Willow can walk through walls.

“Fear, Itself,” the season four Halloween special, is a lot creepier.

The gang gets trapped in a haunted house while a demon preys on their individual fears.

If you’re not going out this Halloween, then pop one of these episodes into the DVD player, pour a cup of cocoa and let the frights begin.

Stay tuned!
