As a young writer or artist, it is difficult to get work published, but a new magazine called The Oklahoman Review will help with that, said Leslie Jacobs, an English junior and the editor-in-chief of the magazine.
The English department started the magazine, which is an updated version of the Papyrus, a literary magazine that featured OSU students’ work, Jacobs said.
However, the Oklahoman Review, will feature not only OSU students’ work but also work from students at other Midwestern universities.
Some of the universities include the University of Oklahoma, the University of Tulsa, the University of Kansas and the University of Colorado.
“We wanted to have a wider variety of submissions,” Jacobs said. “We wanted to branch out beyond the Papyrus and beyond OSU.”
The magazine will include original art, fiction and non-fiction stories and poetry.
Blaine Greteman, a faculty adviser for the magazine, said The Oklahoman Review is one of few journals that is totally dedicated to undergraduate work.
“Hopefully it will be a publication that will give the university more exposure and will hopefully give the students more exposure,” he said.
Jordan Love, an OU student, is a corresponding editor for the magazine.
Love said he thinks the magazine will be a good way for students across the area to get work published.
“I think the magazine is an excellent resource for undergraduates in the area,” he said. “It’s a great tool for getting your ‘stuff’ out there as an artist.”
The staff is comprised of students of different majors and backgrounds who have experience in writing and editing, said Sasha Denkinska, assistant editor of the magazine.
“We are a diverse group of students,” she said. “We tried to find people who will think out of the box.”
She said they also want students of all majors and backgrounds to submit work.
“I think the idea to have a magazine of such kind was started by the English department in hopes that undergraduate students of any major will use this amazing opportunity to get some recognition for their talents,” she said.
The deadline to submit work is Nov. 3.
Students can submit their pieces by e-mail, mail and Facebook.
They can also call the English department at 405-744-6416 or send an e-mail to oklahomanreview@gmail.com.
Jacobs said they hope the first issue will be about 100 pages with at least five fiction stories, five non-fiction stories, 20 poems and 15 art pieces.
The winning piece in each category will receive $250.
Jacobs said the first issue will be published in late February and the staff hopes to enter the magazine in a couple of competitions to give the writers and artists more exposure.
Greteman said any students who consider themselves good writers or artists should submit something.
“It’s kind of like dating because the worst thing that can happen is we’ll say ‘no,’” he said. “It’s hugely gratifying if you do get accepted and get read.”
