Texas group Eli Young Band set to perform on Beta’s front lawn during walkaround.
This year’s homecoming walkaround welcomes the Eli Young Band.
Every year, crowds swarm to Stillwater for the elaborate decorations and displays of cowboy spirit.
Greek houses have spent countless hours on pomping in preparation for homecoming, but not at the Beta Theta Pi house, said homecoming chair Greg Smith.
“There is no pomping [at our fraternity house], but for good reason,” Smith said. “[Pomping is] great because it brings in lots of people for homecoming.
“We want to take advantage of that and raise a lot of money for our charity.”
This year, in place of intricate decorations there will be a free Eli Young Band concert on Beta’s front lawn.
“We have always put on carnivals with a few bands; this year I wanted to change it up a bit and change the way the house has been doing things,” Smith said.
The band was booked through its online agent and preparations for this homecoming were created for the Betas with help from Omega Phi Alpha.
Smith said he looked for bands that a lot of people knew.
In addition to the Eli Young Band, Cross Canadian Ragweed was a name that came up a lot, Smith said.
The Eli Young Band is a red dirt band and alumni of the University of North Texas.
The band is known for singing “Small Town Kid” and “Oklahoma Girl” and has recently released a new album titled “Jet Black and Jealous.”
The band has been together for eight years and plays in mostly southern states.
It is set to play in The Wormy Dog Saloon in Oklahoma City, JC Cowboys in Weatherford and at Stillwater’s Red Dirt Rivalry at the Tumbleweed on Oct 23.
Davilyn Rich, president of Omega Phi Alpha, said the concert is going to be great.
“I have seen the Eli Young Band in concert before, and they put on a great show,” Rich said.
“All the money raised the night of the concert goes straight to the domestic violence center, so we hope everyone can make it out and give even some pocket change to help out those that really need it.”
The house will have popcorn, cotton candy and homemade baked goods.
The concert begins at 6 p.m., and the Beta house will collect donations.
“We are hoping to be able to donate $1,000 at least to the domestic violence center,” Rich said.
In addition to the Eli Young Band, Skyline Circle will also perform.
