They were enrolled at OSU 42 years ago — before the days of computer software and nanopomp.

But the students of the 1960s could probably still relate to those working on this year’s homecoming festivities.

The OSU yearbook described the tradition in 1966.

“Homecoming was something … staying up all night to poke one more flower … fighting the mobs to look at decorations … oohing and aahing during the parade and waving at friends on, in and around floats … ”

The yearbook goes on to discuss the game. “But the thing that will be remembered was the game … 39 seconds before the end, we had upset No. 3 in the nation, and then they scored …”

On Oct. 29, 1966, the homecoming game ended 17-21, lost to the University of Nebraska.

The students of the 1970s also caught the homecoming fever. As seen in the 1978 photos, the “Lambda Chi and Alpha Chi Omega picketed for a victory at the homecoming game.”

Meanwhile, “Alpha Gamma Rho surprised the crowd with an elephant leading their float entry,” according to the yearbook.
