Good game doesn’t always equal victory

Widely known as the greatest homecoming celebration in the nation, OSU features traditions such as the walkaround, Homecoming and Hoops and the Sea of Orange parade.

But, the main event is always the football game.

Since the beginning of the millennium, the Cowboys have just three victories on homecoming compared to five losses, but it hasn’t always been that way.

OSU’s all-time record for homecoming games stands at 45-34-7, including nine games against OU.

The Pokes look to improve that record this year as they take on Baylor, and hopefully improve their season record to 7-0.

Whether this year’s game will be good remains to be seen, but there have been some great games in he past.

The top five best homecoming games:

No. 5: Oklahoma State, then Oklahoma A&M, had its first homecoming against the Washburn University Ichabods on Nov. 26, 1921.

OSU won the low scoring scrap 13-0.

No. 4: The Cowboys took on OU for the second time at a homecoming game on Nov. 1, 1924.

The Cowboys won a low scoring game 6-0, as they beat OU for just the second time in school history.

No. 3: The homecoming game of 1975.

Kansas State came into Stillwater with a record of 3-6, and the Cowboys quickly showed why.

OSU put up 56 points while holding KSU to 3.

The 53-point gap is the widest winning margin in Oklahoma State homecoming history.

No. 2: In 2002 Texas A&M came to town for homecoming.

The game went back and forth, but in the end OSU beat the Aggies for the first time since 1988, Barry Sanders’ final year.

Tatum Bell and Vernon Grant were the stars for OSU.

Bell scored three times including a 64 yard run, and Grant intercepted a pass in the end zone with a minute remaining to seal the victory.

No. 1: Perhaps it seems great because it was so recent, but last season’s homecoming game was one of the most exciting in Cowboy football history.

Kansas State traveled to Stillwater after upsetting the Cowboys the year before in Manhattan, Kan.

OSU had a good start to the season and wanted to continue their run.

The teams traded scores the entire game, neither team able to pull away.

K-State scored a touchdown to take the lead by one with 1:10 left to play, and the game appeared to be over.

But, the Cowboys drove the length of the field, and Jason Ricks kicked a 26-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to win it 41-39.
