The cost of a falling market
Without fail, every semester an opinion writer rants about cyclists and walkers alike and their cohabitation on this campus.
Without fail, no one pays attention.
I used to think it was only stupid freshmen who were dumb enough to stand in a place where they could be hit by a moving vehicle.
Apparently, a lot of stupid people do not understand that a bicycle can and will hurt you.
When someone goes to the trouble of painting lines and setting off a portion of the massive sidewalk for a purpose, then you should probably pay attention.
Just as it is unacceptable to carry on a conversation in the middle of I-35, it should never be done in the bike lane.
That is just silly and dangerous for both parties.
The lane next to the Union is one of the biggest nightmares on campus.
So many people casually stroll across the lane without bothering to look, chat with their buddies or just stand there like idiots.
The other day, this girl was walking in the middle of the bike lane talking on her cell phone.
She is lucky that I felt nice that day, or it would have been trouble.
So many do not seem to understand the reasons we bicyclers ride our stallions.
They just see us as an inconvenience to their difficult task of walking and socializing in high traffic areas.
Many of us ride bikes to get to class faster.
Some, like me, never allot enough time to get to class. When I fly down that lane at 2:20, get out of the way.
All of us will say we ride bikes to better the environment.
Don’t be angry that we don’t drive our Escalades to class or throw McDonald’s cups on the ground.
We are just riding our bikes to save the world that you are destroying. Sorry.
Another cycle perk is convenience. You can go anywhere on a bike — except for the bike lane, apparently.
If a bike has hit you while you were “chilling” in the bike lane, I don’t feel sorry for you. If a bike has hit you outside the bike lane, then I bet it was pretty funny. And I still don’t feel sorry for you.
I know that the bike lane may seem like a great hang out spot just like the autobahn, but for the safety of all, please find a new place to meet your buddies.
Don’t be stupid, stand on the sidewalk. Be aware of your surroundings, not just the bicyclers.

This article made me angry. Yes, I agree that people shouldn’t walk in the bike lane. But, if we can’t walk in the bike lane, the bicyclists shouldn’t be able to ride their bikes on the pedestrian part of the sidewalk. Also, the comment “If a bike has hit you outside the bike lane, then I bet it was pretty funny. And I still don’t feel sorry for you”, was very rude. That’s pretty much the same as saying, If a car were to hit you while you weren’t in the street, that’d be funny. Pretty much the main point in my comment is that this Travis Tindell that you call a “writer” is really just a jerk.
Thanks for saving the world from us walkers. It’s highly unlikely that the mass production of bicycles requires the use of fossil fuels. It’s also plainly obvious that ALL bicyclists are consciously striving to save the world, and that ALL non-cyclists throw McDonald’s cups on the round.
Travis,
Why not try getting up earlier and allotting more time for your commute. It seems irresponsible to plow over pedestrians because you are late for class. Everyone should look out all times: pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists. According to this writers theory, if you are a pedestrian crossing a “pedestrian crosswalk” then you have the right of way and are safe from getting hit by a car. WRONG!!! Why don’t you ask the girl in the hospital if she was safe in the crosswalk. Just because bicyclers have a “bicycle lane” does not mean they have some high power. EVERYONE needs to be aware at all times and never “EXPECT” people to follow regulations/laws. Oh, and don’t expect the OSU police to enforce these regulations.
Seriously why is this guy still writing for the paper? He’s a disgrace, and his ramblings follow no logic. If you think it would be funny to hit a pedestrian when he/she is not in the bike lane try it with me and see what happens. You wouldn’t be laughing when my lawyer got finished with you.
Travis, props to you. People relax he is not saying all walkers throw mcdonalds cups on the ground or ride escalades. It is called sarcasm, and quite hilarious. Kristin, there are only 2 bike lanes on the whole campus which means we have to ride outside of those lanes to get to our classes, and when people knowingly still walk in the bike lanes. Come on there are ONLY 2 bike lanes, thats not too hard to watch out for us bikers. Chill people and try to look both ways when you pass through the bike lanes. Just like you would look both ways on 1-35 haha.
I agree that everyone should be aware of their surroundings at all times. And, I agree that pedestrians should not linger in the bike lane. My problem is that bicyclists ride on the sideWALK. I believe the sidewalk is for walking, and I would like to express my appreciation for those bike riders who walk their bikes on the sidewalk rather than sideswipe those of us who walk on it.
Why are you people picking his articles apart? Get the stick out of your butt and relax. He’s quite entertaining and I adore his style.
