Wes Haddox and Savannah Smith, co-chair members for the Real Cowboys Recycle committee, show off the new paper recycling bin on the east side of the Classroom Building. The group’s goal is to make OSU’s campus more environmentally friendly by encouraging students to recycle.
While you are enjoying a few beers with your buddies at Saturday’s tailgate, the SGA Sustainability Committee will be there to remind you to save those cans after smashing them on your forehead.
The tailgating recycling program, known as “Real Cowboys Recycle,” began last year as part of the committee’s goal to make OSU a more environmentally friendly campus.
“Even small things, like one can or bottle, can make a difference,” said Wes Haddox, co-chair of the committee.
Members of the group give tailgaters clear plastic bags to fill with their aluminum cans, which members pick up after the game.
The group received a good response from the athletic community and hopes for the same this semester.
“Last year was hectic and crazy since it was our first year doing it,” said Savannah Smith, co-chair of the group. “But we are taking small steps.”
The group is also trying to get “Paper Retriever” recycling bins put in around campus.
Last week, they were successful in bringing five bins to campus.
Locations on the east side of the Classroom Building, as well on north Monroe Street, are giving students a place to recycle mixed paper. Magazines, newspapers, old class notes and even junk mail can be thrown in the bins. Although these locations are temporary, finalized locations will be announced.
“The Registrar Office has already been using the bins to recycle old files and shredded paper,” Smith said. “Hopefully, students take advantage of this program. And once we are successful, we can go to the next phase.”
By teaming up with other student organization, such as Eco-OSU, the committee will take on different types of issues and perspectives.
Because the Physical Plant handles mostly office-related recycling and waste removal, such as the white paper that accumulates under the printers at the library, the burden falls on students to get involved.
“There is always more we can do,” said Mike Burnett, grounds manager at Physical Plant.
The committee has been working hard to ensure that students know they can make a difference.
Students can get involved and take on those issues that are affecting our campus by joining the committee. Members come from all backgrounds and majors to make a difference on campus.
All majors and classifications are welcome, and applications are in the Student Union Room 060.
“The group is relaxed and informal, but we get down to business,” Smith said.
