Siera Strawser, a junior midfielder for the Cowgirls, and the rest of the team look to open the home schedule on the right foot with two games this weekend against smaller conference foes. The Cowgirls opened the season with two road victories.
A win is a win to the Cowgirl soccer team; but it will be that much sweeter at home.
The Cowgirls are 2-0 this season with wins coming at Southern Methodist University and Oral Roberts University where OSU outscored its opponents 8-1.
All-American Yolanda Odenyo said she is pleased with where the team is so far.
“First of all, it’s just nice to get a win no matter who you play,” Odenyo said. “We were happy both in Dallas and at ORU. I mean, you can tell on paper and on the field that we are a better team, but it’s still nice to get a win.
“We played well and we went out there and had fun, and everyone got to play.”
The Cowgirls have jumped six spots to No. 17 since the preseason poll after their first two games. This can be attributed to OSU’s quick fire offense.
OSU has out shot its opponents 44-18 on shots on goal, and has scored 7 of its 8 goals in the first half.
OSU will be taking on Rice and Northwestern State over the weekend.
Rice finished 12-7-2 last season, and is 2-0 this season with wins against Sam Houston State and Texas-San Antonio. Rice has outscored its opponents 7-1 this season. This will mark the first time the two teams have met.
Odenyo said she welcomes the challenge of playing a new team.
“Coach said they are a good team,” Odenyo said. “That’s about all we know about them. It’s always exciting to play a team that you haven’t played before or someone you don’t know much about. It’s nice to get a surprise every once in a while. I guess it’s a good test for us to see how we deal with things we’re not so sure about, you know, when we’re not as calculated on how they’re going to play.
“Honestly, I just think we’re all just excited to play at home.”
The Cowgirls start their home schedule this Friday against Rice at 7 p.m., and will host Northwestern State (1-2-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Demons finished 11-7-2 last season and return eight starters.
The Cowgirls are 16-2-3 over their past two seasons at home.
