The Student Government Association plans to keep the Student Union open during its $86 million reconstruction.
SGA President Emilee Lehenbauer said the project is being designed and construction might begin as soon as summer 2009.
“SGA will work on making plans to make sure the Union will stay open and keep functioning during construction so it won’t be an inconvenience to students,” Lehenbauer said.
She said the reconstruction will retain the Union’s exterior while gutting and rebuilding the interior.
Lehenbauer said she has goals for SGA this year, and that she and other representatives have been working hard over the summer to come up with a basic mission statement and a new logo for the association.
The SGA has a constitution, Lehenbauer said, but is looking to have a short, sweet statement that lets students and the public know what it wants for the future.
Lehenbauer said she hopes the new logo and mission statement will guide current and future SGA members.
She said she also wants to improve communication across campus between SGA and other clubs, departments and administrations. She plans on making sure SGA does all it can to communicate with students and take all the suggestions they have to offer.
Another way SGA plans on improving its communication across campus is to host an event for club presidents known as “Presidents of the Round Table,” Lehenbauer said.
All presidents across campus will be invited to this event to come together, grow as an organization and share information about events throughout the year, she said.
Lehenbauer said the this event is on Sept. 26, and, if well-attended and successful, will be a monthly event.
