Give Palin a chance

Snaps for John McCain. No, he didn’t choose Elle Woods as his running mate. Unfortunately, she’s a fictional character. He did choose Sarah Palin, and she’s as real as they come.

She’s currently the first female governor of Alaska – a position she has only held for two years. In those two years, she’s been praised by Alaskans time after time. Before that, she headed the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation committee and was mayor of the Alaskan town of Wasilla. Critics call this a lack of experience. I call this a lack of experience. However, I also see it as a reason for Palin to be asking questions. In Alaska she proved to be an advocate of ethics and openness in government. When she asks questions in Washington, she’ll be opening floodgates of information to the public.

Speaking of information, frightened Obama cultists wasted no time digging up dirt on Palin.

Her daughter Bristol, 17, is pregnant. McCain and Palin were more than happy to let the public know Bristol is indeed pregnant. She’s keeping the baby and marrying the father. Does this reflect poor parenting? I think not. I’m sure Palin and her husband are wonderful parents. After all, her other four children aren’t running amok. Bristol made a poor judgment call. When she told her parents, she wasn’t disowned, or sent off to some convent until after the baby’s birth. She was met with love and the support of proud parents.

It’s also rumored Palin’s son Trig is actually Bristol’s son. I saw pictures of a pregnant Palin, and if that’s not enough proof, I have a feeling Palin will be more than willing to allow DNA testing to prove Trig is her son.

Her husband, Todd, has a charge of driving while intoxicated. He received it in 1984. Let me make this clear. Todd has one DWI. Palin herself doesn’t have one, and Todd Palin hasn’t made a habit of driving around Alaska with a bottle of booze in hand.

Did I mention Todd Palin is a member of the United Steel Workers union? Or that he is a production operator in Alaska’s North Slope oil fields? You can bet that Sarah Palin will be working on behalf of blue collar workers.

Her son Track is headed to Iraq with the U.S. Army on Sept. 11. I think it’s safe to say Palin will be working to bring home Track and our armed forces in a timely manner.

Palin is a member of the NRA, but that doesn’t mean she thinks guns should be sold like candy.

Sarah Palin is a woman of quality. What she lacks in experience she makes up for in heart. She promises change, and has what it takes to deliver that change. She’s ready to be a leader. Let’s make her one.

    Palin:
She has next to no experience in government. When ask about national security back ground or knowledge regarding foreign affairs the best Ms. McCain could come up with was “she lives right by Russia.” She has only traveled outside the country twice in her life. She belonged (as did her husband “Mr. first Dude”) to a 3rd party which among other things supports allowing Alaska to secede from the United States and feels the only thing wrong with the John Birch Society was it was to liberal! She tried to have a local Librarian fired for not banning books. Used her political office to try to have fired and smear a state trooper who is in a custody battle with her sister. Is being investigated for this and is worried enough about the outcome to have recently “lawyered up.” Currently has pretty messy family issues, recently gave birth to a son with Downs Syndrome and has a 17 year old daughter who is pregnant. Ironically she has fought sex education in the schools and availability of contraception for minors. Believes that for 9 months a woman has no right to control what is happening to her own body and is basically nothing more than a baby container. She does not believe in a women’s right to choose to end a pregnancy, even if she has been raped. Does not believe human pollution has anything to do with global warming (even Bush has had to back down on this one). Is so in bed with big oil she is willing to watch as the polar bear and beluga whales become extinct, rather than slow the possibility of drilling. She would open up one of the last great wilderness on earth to exploitation by oil interests. Laughs when hearing a fellow Republican woman being called a bitch in public (she and the woman had disagreed on several issues) I guess this does make her on par with McCain who thinks it is alright to call your wife a c–t in public. Has an undergraduate degree in Journalism for a small obscure university. She has been repeatedly described as stubborn with a vicious streak – even by family and friends. (nick name Sarah Barracuda) Did fund raising and accepted money from the same sources as Sen. Ted Stevens. Pushed for the “bridge to no where – the flipped when convenient to do so. She has been named Sen. John McCain’s VP selection for the Republican ticket. Sen. McCain is 72 years old and has reoccurring cancer as part of his health history. One can not help but question Mr. McCain’s judgment regarding her selection.

Well it’s a good thing she’ll only be able to cast tie-breakers in the senate and preside over the eletoral college, so it’s basically moot what she believes since she’s not the one forming the policies. Besides, it’s better to have the one with the minimal experience be your party’s VP candidate than your Presidential candidate.

And the whole health concerns with McCain are ridiculous. He has had 4 cases of malignant melanoma. All of which were found early and removed. It’s not like he’s been enduring repeated treatments of chemo.

Nice recap, Rebecca, you’ve been reading your news. Now, shall I provide you with a similar list of complaints regarding Hillary Cinton? It would stretch on and on for pages and pages . . . yet, she almost became the Democratic nominee for President.

Thankfully, we don’t make judgments about a potential leader based on how much heart they have. But some think it’s appropriate to base those decisions on perhaps the leader’s running-mate’s genitalia. This in itself is a huge insult to women, but it seems to be the only thing going for her, and Palin’s complete lack of experience proves exactly what McCain is trying to do. Most call it “smart,” but I again call it a slap in the face to women. Palin is anti-woman, pro-abstinence only sex education, and anti-choice. I would hope that women and the country would see past this ploy, but then again for a population responsible for eight years of Bush, it might just work.

  7. Sep042008 2:15 pm

Rebecca, and how does Obama have any more experience? He’s written two books, been a community/social orginizer and taught law at a college. He hasn;t been in the Senate long enough to even make an impact, and he did nothing for his home state. I’d say the Republican VP pick has (albeit slim amounts) more experience than the Democratic pick for President. Sad, I know.

At first I thought it was very smart of McCain to chose her to pick up the votes Hillary would have gotten. However, after learning more about her I think he made a baaad move. First off, his main slogan is “Country First,” and Palin is a large supporter of the Alaska Independence Party whose main priority is to get Alaska to succeed from the Union!! I’m sorry, how is that country first? Then, she’s a “member” of Women for Life Organization, yet voted for the death penalty. Also, she cut major funds Alaska had to support teen mothers and now look at her daughter. I think the fact that she tries to put all the emphasis on her kids is a way of getting the attention on them and not on all her contradictions and inability to help run a country. She talks about her son who’s in Iraq, her daughter and her bastard child, and her son with down-syndrome. Okay yeah Sarah, hold up the kid after your speech (which she did!)! That’ll teach us Democrats. Man were we wrong. She kept talking about how all Obama wants to do is “save the world.” Well I’m sorry but if we don’t have a world in a few years from global warming then none of this shits gonna matter! Then, she really got on the cowboys’ side (did you see them waving their Stetsons?!?!?!) by reminding them of Obama’s tax increases. Um, FYI the tax increases are only going to hurt the rich, Texas, oil-owning bastards who have been able to take extra vacations and buy summer houses while the rest of us have to put a doctor bill on our credit cards because gas prices are so high!! She says “victory is near in Iraq.” Victory of what? A war we should have NEVER been a part of? A war we started for no reason? Okaaay…I mean, sure I guess the war is near. She told the cowboys Iraq has plans to do America great harm. BS. And you know what? If they do, it’s George Bush’s fault! This is just adding to the fact that she’s all about abolishing gay marriage (God forbid they be allowed to get married) and abortion. she doesn’t even support abortion in instances of rape or incest. What a c–t. Also, McCain’s like what, 95? How is he going to last in office? Unless he starts talking to Cindy’s (McCain) plastic surgeon, we are going to have one old man in office if he gets elected. In which case, if he croaks, I am terrified at the thought of Sarah Palin running America. Does it not occur to anyone that just in case places like Iraq DO want to do us harm, they’re going to take a prime chance on a woman who looks like she should be running a Pampered Chef party, not the country.

  11. Sep052008 8:15 am

Will… how is it any different for the Democratic party to do the same. Re-read your new statement.

Thankfully, we don’t make judgments about a potential leader based on how much heart they have. But some think it’s appropriate to base those decisions on perhaps the leader’s skin color. This in itself is a huge insult to the races, but it seems to be the only thing going for him, and Obama’s complete lack of experience proves exactly what Democrats are trying to do. Most call it “smart,” but I again call it a slap in the face to the U.S. Obama is anti-woman, pro-abortion (partial birth at that). I would hope that the country would see past this ploy, but then again for a population responsible for eight years of Clinton, it might just work.

But that’s playing the race card, right?

  12. Sep052008 11:15 am

You know, experience is a tricky word when considering Obama’s time in the Senate. On average, he votes only about 55% of the time. In fact, I find it hard to define his views on issues such as foreign policy (voted only 44% of the time) and reproductive issues (voted 25% of the time).

    http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=9490

To be fair though, both Mccain and Obama repeatedly refused to define what issues they would support if elected (Political Courage Test).

  13. Sep052008 12:06 pm

    Sean
There is a difference between a democratically voted nominee, and a candidate who uses tokenism to garner votes. The latter is the case of John McCain, who has selected a manifestly underqualified unknown governor only because 1) she is a right-wing religious demagogue and 2) she is a woman. There would be no other tangible reason for why Palin was chosen, aside from that. It’s tokenism at its worst, and that’s my point. What you’re trying to say is different, because Obama was elected in primaries by votes, not chosen by one person for the purpose of pandering. I mean seriously, this is who John McCain considers the “person most prepared to take [his] place.”

And for the record, I was one of the first to cry out against social liberals judging Bristol Palin for getting pregnant.

  14. Sep052008 1:23 pm

The debate over Palin’s experience is largely irrelevant–most voters don’t care much about political experience, in fact, a lack of beltway-experience is often a great benefit in politics, especially for Presidential contenders.

But there’s another reason Palin’s “experience” is irrelevant–she is already the future of the Republican Party. Whether McCain wins or loses in November, Palin has burst onto the scene and fired up conservatives like no one since Reagan. She may well turn out to be the Thatcher of America.

It’s no surprise that Palin upsets liberals so much. She is an old-time Conservative, she is pro-life, she clings to guns and religion, and she’s not your typical “feminist.” The fact that she upsets the left is a good thing. She scares her opponents.

Palin has plenty of experience. But, even if people did think she lacked political experience, this would not necessarily be a bad thing for her.

Obama will probably win in November. But Palin makes me a lot less worried about the future of the Republican Party. Finally, someone we can be passionate about.

So keep up the attacks on Palin! Keep em comin! This is great! It’s what we’ve been missing.

    PALIN 2016

As a conservative, I find that Sarah Palin embodies what the majority of conservatives believe in. Her values reflect mine. Do I agree with everything about her or what she says? I probably won’t. Is she the most qualified? I’m sure there are more out there. I would have preferred Romney. Is she a Token? Of course she is, and it was a very wise political move on McCain’s part.
Still, the fact you are ignoring is that she is just as prepared, or even more prepared to (possibly) be President than your candidate. A man who gives lofty speeches, but has nothing to back them. A man who is friends with a convited terrorist. A man who has written two books, but has never authored major legislation. At least McCain stands up for what he believes in. His bi-partisanship has angered me at times. Think “The Gang of 14″
The liberal base has elected a man soley based on his charisma and his oratorical skills. They pushed in a rookie who they believed could garner votes because “he doesn’t look like the others on one dollar bills.” Geroge Soros and the media have propelled him to a state of cult classic status.
By McCain picking Palin, he is fighting fire with fire.
And for the record, the Democratic process of caucusing is a Joke. OK, place your vote. OK, candidate X didn’t recieve enough… revote for another candidate; repeat the process.
Anyhow, that’s cool if your a Democrat, Liberal or whatever. As long as you have a reason to vote for your candidate, a reason you believe in, that’s fine. But a lot of those I see voting for Obama are doing it blindly.

  16. Sep052008 3:00 pm

Ciara…. It’s McCain’s mother who is 95, not him. Actually she’s 96, and when they announced here name, she stood up quicker than most 40 year-olds. She’s in great healthy shape. Seeing her gives me no worries about electing her 72 year-old son to the White House.

  17. Sep052008 3:37 pm

As a recent graduate who has moved to Anchorage, I am proud that Alaska is now getting more attention since the state is actually pretty great. However, while Palin has done many great things for this state, look into what else is going on. An ethics complaint, her exaggerations of what she has done for oil, and much more.

  18. Sep052008 3:50 pm

    Sean
Haha, frankly, I really wish you’d stop assuming I’m some yelling slobbering Obama supporter. I promise you I am not rabid! I could very well be a McCain supporter who is frustrated with McCain’s choice of running-mate. But the point is not to what political party you assume I’m affiliated. I’m simply trying to make a point about why this annoys me. It’s an insult to women, and even IF the left had done this (they have not), it wouldn’t make it okay on McCain’s side. And you are right, it may very well work for McCain… I have conceded to that. But it highlights my main complaint with American politics. It also highlights a frightening possibility: that Palin could easily fill in John McCain’s role. Just look at what happened with Truman. VPs are never irrelevant.

The reality is I really wouldn’t be saying anything had John McCain picked someone more qualified like Olympia Snowe, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, or Elizabeth Dole. These are women conservates who I mostly admire for what they’ve actually accomplished. Palin is a pork barrel spender who has funneled millions in earmark funds to pay for wasteful state projects, and I resent that about someone who hypocritically lampoons the left for “taking [our] money.”
That’s great that Palin represents your views, but I think her irrelevancy proves that McCain just wants to win, and this worries me about someone who wants to hold the highest executive office. I want responsible and smart choices to be made, not strategically clever pandering.
    Peace

As a non-Oklahoman, it is nice to know that there are enough right-wing, uninformed hicks in Oklahoma to justify the stereotype that most of us have. Take a bow, Sean. Sarah Palin is a liar and not particularly bright. In her very first speech to the nation, she called herself a reformer dedicated to making government more ethical. She said she was against the Bridge to Nowhere. However, among her very first acts as mayor of that backwater, Wasilla, was to hire a former lobbyist of the King of Pork, Ted Stevens. She was able to get $11.9 million in federal funds for her town, where the average adult has a 10th grade education. Being elected their leader is like being the best Alpine skiier in Ecuador. She then ran for Governor, championing the Bridge, and arguing that Alaska should get even more pork. Only when the political heat against the Bridge became unbearable did she refuse to build the Bridge. Alaska has no sales tax or income tax. Why do they need it when their elected representatives steal from the federal treasury? As a non-Alaskan who believes in cutting federal expenditures, I resent the bait and switch she and her conservative/reactionary cabal are attempting. Then their are the right wing lies about her having the requisite experience to be President. Unfortunately, the disingenuous nature of this argument is best exemplified by that neo-Con hero, Karl Rove, who previously stated, when Gov. Cain of Virginia was being considered as a Dem. VP candidate, that his service as mayor of Richmond, the 101st largest city in the country, and his 3 years of service as Gov. of Va. left him woefully short of the essential qualifications for the job of VP. Then, there is the howling of protest from the right whenever anyone voices anything negative about Palin, claiming that it is an unfair gender-based attack. Funny, when Hillary Clinton argued that attacks on her similarly were unfair, Dick Morris said she needed to toughen up or else she couldn’t deal with the big boys from Russia and China. More tellingly, Palin herself called Clinton a “whiner.” Guess the shoe is a little tight when it is on the other foot. Finally, she attended a junior college and then graduated from the U. of Idaho with a degree in journalism. Hardly the stuff to give anyone any confidence that she has the intelligence to run this country at a time like this. Combine this with the fact that McCain only got in the Naval Academy because of his father’s connections, and then graduated at the bottom of the class, and you have the most lightweight intellectual ticket in the history of the Presidency. I don’t want “average Americans” or “the girl next door” to run this country. I want the smartest people we can find. I want the best and the brightest, not the breasts and the whitest.

Palin is not complaining about the attacks. Hillary was. Big difference

    Mitch,

I would guess we all watch “The Daily Show.” No need to parrot their salient points (which work better with video evidence anyway) Simply post a link… like so:

“In Alaska she proved to be an advocate of ethics and openness in government. ”

Laffo she’s trying to fire her brother-in-law because he’s divorcing her sister.
ETHICS INDEED GOOD SIR. I hope she uses the full power of the federal government to resolve her redneck family squabbles. It’s right there in the constitution, its what the framers wanted.
