Dear editor,
In response to the Aug. 25 letter about lowering the drinking age: When I turned 18 in Minnesota in 1975, I could legally drink. This was actually good for me, since it meant three fewer years of fascination with the “forbidden fruit” of alcohol.
So shouldn’t I be in favor of lowering the drinking age now? Maybe – but let me tell you about other things I did at age 18, in 1975.
I followed politics closely. I read up on every Democratic contender for the 1976 presidential race. Early on, I singled out Jimmy Carter from the pack and predicted him as the Democratic nominee. With a Republican incumbent there wasn’t as much on the Republican side to pay attention to, but I certainly knew the salient facts about Ford and his running mate.
The Aug. 25 O’Colly reported OSU students responding to the name Joe Biden by saying “Who?”, “I don’t care,” etc. Yet Biden has been a major force in American politics for 30 years! Even those who vote Republican ought to take an interest in who the opposition is.
So I say, let the drinking age be lowered for those 18-year-olds who can past a test on current affairs.
Sincerely,
