Zac Robinson took over when Bobby Reid got hurt against Florida Atlantic and kept the starting quarterback job the rest of the year, setting season and single-game total yardage records. His backup has not yet been determined.
Last season there was much debate about who should be the starting quarterback.
This season, there is no question — Zac Robinson.
Robinson broke the record for total offense in a season at OSU in 2007 without even starting the season as the starting quarterback.
With 3,671 yards last season, Robinson passed Josh Fields’ record by about 600 yards.
Robinson is also ranked 7th in career passing yards and 9th in career total offense.
This will be Robinson’s first season to start as the starting quarterback, but he says he is comfortable with the situation.
“It’s a little bit different,” Robinson said. “I haven’t thought about it a whole lot, but it definitely is different taking the first snap of the first game. I’m just really excited about it.”
Robinson is one of the strongest dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation. Robinson was one of two players in a BCS conference to rush for more than 800 yards and pass for more than 2,800 yards. The only other player was Tim Tebow of Florida, who won the Heisman Trophy.
Robinson said he is looking forward to this year’s offense.
“There’s a lot more talent than there was last year,” Robinson said. “We’re a lot deeper at receivers, running backs, and the offensive linemen are a year older, so I think that we’ll be better than we were last year.”
The backup quarterback position is up in the air and will not be decided before Saturday’s game against Washington State.
Sophomore Alex Cate and junior Brandon Weeden are competing for the position and both are capable players.
Gundy said the only reason a candidate hasn’t been selected is that neither of the players has done anything to separate himself, but that the competition for the spot is making both better players.
