Three members of the Oklahoma State women’s golf team have been selected to represent their respective countries at the World Amateur Team Championship in Adelaide, Australia, later this fall.
Cowgirl senior Pernilla Lindberg and freshman Caroline Hedwall will comprise two-thirds of the Swedish squad in the event, while freshman Caroline Masson will compete for her native Germany.
“We are very excited about having three players represent Oklahoma State in the World Amateur,” said Cowgirl coach Laura Matthews, who was a four-time participant in the event for Canada.
“The girls have all worked very hard for this, and I am extremely proud of each of them. I know from my own experiences that it is something they will never forget.”
Lindberg, an All-American each of the past two seasons, has extensive international experience, having competed for both the Swedish National and Junior National squads.
Hedwall is coming off a productive summer that saw her finish as the runner-up at the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship.
Masson has been equally successful with a victory at the Spanish Ladies Amateur Championship last spring to her credit.
The biennial event is scheduled to run from Oct. 8-11 and will be conducted at the Grange Golf Club’s East and West Courses in Adelaide.
More than 100 men’s and women’s teams from across the globe will compete for the Eisenhower Trophy (men) and the Espirito Santo Trophy (women).
Each team consists of two or three players, with the two lowest scores from each team serving as the team score for that round. The tournament champion will be determined after 72 holes.
South Africa is the defending women’s champion after winning the event in 2006.
The WATC is conducted by the International Golf Federation and has been conducted since 1958.
The IGF was founded that same year to encourage the international development of the game and to employ golf as a vehicle to foster friendship and sportsmanship.
