A piece of heaven has fallen from the sky and landed in a few blessed cities and states. Joanna Evans tells us mere mortals why QT reigns supreme and of the void its fans feel since it left Stillwater.
For the unfortunate few that have not been able to experience QuikTrip, it is the king of convenience stores.
Besides providing the basic necessities of any ordinary gas station, QuikTrip’s services soar high above.
Each QuikTrip offers a kitchen area stocked with Hotzi breakfast sandwiches, a wide selection of fresh sandwiches, hot dogs, taquitos, egg rolls, as well as their infamous flavored Slushees.
QuikTrip is one of a kind because it operates under professionally trained chefs and bakers.
These pros guarantee the freshness of their products sets them ahead of typical gas stations.
Jess Slanker, an English sophomore, said QuikTrip feels clean and safe.
“You don’t feel like you are going to get shot,” said Slanker.
Slanker is from Tulsa where QuikTrips are a frequent attraction.
Stillwater has not always been QuikTripless; there was once a time when a QuikTrip existed in the home of Oklahoma State University.
“Five to six years ago, there were about three QTs in Stillwater,” said Mike Thornbrugh, manager of QuikTrip’s Public Government Affairs.
“The Valero on Main Street has replaced one of the QuikTrips.”
Two of the employees that worked at that old QuikTrip continue to work at Valero.
Returning to Oklahoma State for the new school year has deprived many students of their QT fixes.
“Stillwater stores no longer fit the long-term plans for QuikTrip. We now tend to be in highly-populated metropolitan areas.
“It just was no longer the direction we were headed,” said Thornbrugh.
Many students would be thrilled at the idea of bringing back the ultimate convenience store to Stillwater.
Audrey Clark, an environmental science freshman, would love having a QuikTrip nearby.
“It would feel a lot more like home and would make me happy,” said Clark.
“I have been having QuikTrip withdrawals and you can’t beat their 49-cent fountain drinks.”
Unfortunately, Stillwater is no longer in the cards for QuikTrip and many students surprisingly have never had the chance to experience the gas station.
While taking a road trip or driving back to your hometown, stop for an indescribable experience known as QuikTrip and be prepared to be wowed.
Let’s face it. It’s hard to beat the “king.”
