The police didn’t “take” your bike, per se.
Instead, your bike disappeared because you haven’t yet registered it.
Unregistered bikes can be impounded and students must pay a $20 release fee, said Jan Cook-Hernandez, the assistant manager of parking services.
Students chaining their two-wheel rides to bike racks must register their bike with campus parking services.
Bicycle registration is mandatory on campus.
If a bicycle is lost or stolen, campus police have more difficulty locating its owner if the bicycle is not registered.
Registered bikes are identified by an orange sticker. The bicycle owner should display the sticker somewhere on the body of the bike.
“A notice is attached to the bike notifying the owner that he or she needs to register the bike,” she said. “If the bike owner does not register the bike, we consider the bike to be abandoned and impound the bike.”
Also, parking a bicycle at a light pole, tree, bench or a road sign is prohibited — bikes can only legally be parked at bike racks.
If a bike is incorrectly parked, the OSU Parking and Transit Services may impound the bike and give a citation when it is taken out of impound.
Bicycle registration is free and the office at 104 USDA Building on Farm Road.
