It’s the second day of the second week, the second installment of TV Ate My Soul and I’m previewing two new shows.
FOX’s highly anticipated and highly budgeted thriller, “Fringe,” is all about how far science and technology have advanced.
Think of it as “The X-Files” meets “The Twilight Zone.”
The three main characters are FBI agent Olivia Dunham, the completely crazy and completely genius Dr. Bishop and his almost-as-smart son Peter (Joshua Jackson).
Being the resourceful, sneaky TV fan that I am, I recently acquired a copy of the two-hour pilot.
It was bomb.
J.J. Abrams really outdid himself with this project. The pilot had excellent yet disgusting special effects.
“Fringe” also features one of the most creative captions I’ve seen in a show.
When the camera passed through the “O” in Boston I almost dropped my Diet Coke.
The pilot introduces the show’s mythology and established its main characters, which allows the show to go anywhere it wants.
Bottom line: Don’t make any plans for Sept. 9.
Now we’re going from dark and dangerous to sunny and dramatic.
That’s right, the bells at West Beverly Hills High School will ring once again when the CW’s “90210” premiers on Sept. 2.
You may be wondering if and why I’m excited for this show.
Two words: Rob Thomas. (No, not Matchbox Twenty Rob Thomas.)
The visionary writer/director behind the cult UPN/CW hit “Veronica Mars” (and one of my personal favorites) is the executive producer and creator of this revamp.
The new “90210” follows Annie and Dixon Wilson as they readjust to city life after moving from Kansas.
Add some fun high school stereotypes, a couple of grown-up characters from the old series and Rob Thomas’ trademark snark and you’ve got one dramalicious show.
One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be weird to see Shannen Doherty on TV again.
I don’t think I’ll be satisfied unless I see her vanquishing a demon.
Sadly, they aren’t native to Beverly Hills.
Because I made a shameless Charmed reference, I have to mention the upcoming DVD release in November.
This thing is going to be freakin’ sweet — the case is a replica of the “Book of Shadows,” for crying out loud!
The release is a while off, but start saving because it isn’t going to be cheap.
Thus concludes my nerding out.
NEXT WEEK: The previews continue.
We are going to look at HBO’s vampire series “True Blood,” Rob Thomas’other show “Cupid” and the NBC comedy “Kath and Kim.”
There may be some “Project Runway” gabbing, as well.
Stay tuned!
