DALLAS — Three players scored goals for Oklahoma State as the Cowgirls opened the season with a 3-0 win over SMU on Saturday night at Westcott Field.
No. 19 OSU outshot the Mustangs in the match, 15-6, with Kyndall Treadwell, Katie Richardson and Siera Strawser scoring goals, as the Cowgirls won their ninth-straight season opener.
“It was a great way to start the season, with a 3-0 win against a quality team on the road,” OSU coach Colin Carmichael said.
“There are still things we need to be a lot better at, but for the first real game, we played well and definitely improved on our exhibition performance.”
OSU had several early scoring chances, including a penalty kick by Strawser that bounced off the crossbar.
The Cowgirls finally took advantage in the 14th minute when Treadwell scored the first goal of her collegiate career from 23 yards out on an assist from Allyson Leggett.
The Cowgirls doubled their lead 20 minutes later.
Strawser sent a long pass upfield, and Richardson outraced the SMU defenders and went one-on-one with Mustang goalie Ashley Gunter. Richardson won the battle, sending a shot into the far left corner to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead.
OSU took the two-goal advantage into intermission after outshooting the Mustangs by an 11-1 margin in the opening half.
The Cowgirls continued their dominating offensive attack in the second half and got back on the scoreboard in the 67th minute.
Kasey Langdon broke free from her defender and sent a pass to Strawser, OSU’s leading goal scorer from a year ago, who drilled a shot into the back of the net from 12 yards out for OSU’s third goal of the night.
“It’s great to start the season off with a win,” Strawser said. “We have a lot of really good attacking players, and that’s exciting. Some teams have one or two main players that score, but we have several, including midfielders, who can contribute goals.”
OSU goalkeeper Erin Stigler collected three saves in the contest to add to her school-record shutout total. The senior now has 16 career shutouts for the Cowgirls.
OSU returns to action Friday when they travel to Tulsa to take on Oral Roberts.
