Each year since 1996, a question on many students’ minds has been, “Who will play Orange Peel?”
Some want rock.
Others request a country artist.
And then you have your few who really want that polka gangsta rap with a splash of death metal.
Once the executive team announces the headlining artist, students react accordingly. Some celebrate while others make angry Facebook groups.
The failure or success of this year’s Orange Peel could determine the future of the event.
The organizers of the first Orange Peel wanted it to be the largest student-produced concert in the nation. This year, Grammy-nominated country band Sugarland headlines the event. American Idol finalist Kellie Pickler, country singer Ashton Shepherd and pop-punk band Motion City Soundtrack fill out the flier.
The first Orange Peel sold 17,043 tickets and featured comedians Bill Cosby and Norm McDonald and rock band Dog’s Eye View.
Country singer Faith Hill and comedian Sinbad helped Orange Peel sell 23,826 tickets in 1999, but the show was rained out.
Jason Mraz headlined the 2005 show, and an all-time low of 5,490 tickets were sold.
The 2006 version of the event featured country singer Alan Jackson, Oklahoma band Hero Factor and comedian Bill Engvall.
With a move to Gallagher-Iba Arena and strong ticket sales, Orange Peels looks to be headed toward a successful year.
The question is, “How do students feel about another country-themed Orange Peel?”
Obviously, it’s impossible to please every critic.
The Daily O’Collegian asked a few students around campus to share their thoughts.
“I’m not going because I don’t have $50 to spend… who’s playing?”
Cody Kuykendall
a sports management senior
“The selection of the artists is very biased. The student body should be more directly involved and aware.”
Tyler Bills
an English senior
“I wouldn’t even see my favorite band, The Hush Sound, for $40.”
Sarah Mower
a psychology junior
“I have never even heard of Sugarland. They should have a party band instead, a fun one.”
Dylan McClure
a geology senior
“I’m most excited about seeing Kellie Pickler. I have been obsessed with her since American Idol, and $40 is cheap for a concert.”
Laura Knecht
a health promotions junior
“I’m just really excited to go with all my friends, and I get to wear my cowboy boots. I think the variety of the music is great.”
Taylor Billings
a business junior
