Why do students have to sign their names when charging items to their bursar accounts?

A requirement that students must sign for items charged to their bursar accounts is a Student Union Bookstore policy that ensures an additional way to track purchases, said Student Union Director Mitch Kilcrease.

“It’s like a credit card,” Kilcrease said. “If there’s ever a question on whether that charge was legitimate or not, we have the (name of) the person that signs it.”

The receipts also serve as backup records in case the bookstore’s computer system fails. Kilcrease said the signatures can be used to track purchases and record them electronically later.

Kilcrease said the policy has been in place since he took the job about three years ago.
