Backpack Prohibition:
The answer? Not forever.
Students are prohibited from carrying backpacks and bags in the Student Union bookstore until Aug. 29, Supervisor Brenda Hoffman said.
Hoffman said the reason for keeping the backpacks out of the bookstore is because of the amount of space in the bookstore.
“It’s because of the room — how crowded it gets in here — and when you put an extra bulk on everyone’s back, it gets too bulky to move around,” Hoffman said.
Aug. 29 is the deadline for book returns. After bookstore traffic slows down, students can bring backpacks into the supply section of the store, Hoffman said. However, backpacks are never allowed in the textbook section of the store.
“If it’s your purse, it’s OK,” Hoffman said. “It’s just those big, cumbersome backpacks — it’s so crowded and students are carrying their baskets.”
Hoffman said the backpack rule is not a security measure.
“Of course, it makes it easy to watch people, but the main reason is space,” Hoffman said.
Hoffman said free lockers are available for students to store backpacks and other items while visiting the store.
“Students aren’t required to just lay their things on the floor,” Hoffman said.
