Seasoned veterans, fresh faces and a promising opening performance.

The Cowgirls won 3-1 on Saturday in an exhibition against Texas Christian University, giving the crowd of 1,001 a show in Cowgirl Soccer Complex.

The No. 23 Cowgirls looked poised throughout the game, staying in control of the field and allowing only 10 shots on goal to their 20.

The first goal of the game came from junior forward Siera Strawser at the 29:01 mark from about 15 yards out with an assist from senior All-American Yolanda Odenyo.

TCU tied the game 10 minutes later by a goal from midfielder Chelsea Cody from 25 yards out.

With the score tied at 1 at halftime, the Cowgirls looked as if they were on a mission to show the crowd how the rest of the season is going to go in the second half.

It didn’t take long for OSU to break the tie.

Off of an assist from junior Kasey Langdon, OSU midfielder Annika Niemeier scored the Cowgirls’ second goal in the 57th minute.

The Cowgirls didn’t stop there.

After a struggle for possession in the 69th minute, sophomore forward Katie Richardson set up freshman Kyndall Treadwell for a goal.

Coach Colin Carmichael was excited about Treadwell’s performance.

“Kyndall scored a great goal and almost had two,” Carmichael said. “She’s just full of energy.

“She’s a great player, and I thought she was fantastic.”

Treadwell, a freshman out of Cleveland, Okla., said she is looking forward to her college career with the Cowgirls.

“It was a lot of fun playing with the girls,” Treadwell said. “Being a freshman, it was really different and exciting, and it was a lot of fun. The girls are awesome.”

Making the adjustment from club soccer to college soccer has seemed smooth for the freshman forward.

Treadwell said she enjoys the atmosphere of a large crowd at OSU and has big hopes for the upcoming season.

Odenyo said she is happy with the outcome of the game but thought the team could improve.

“I think most of all we’re just happy to come out of here with a ‘W’,” Odenyo said. “We’re coming off 10 days of three-a-days; I think we’re tired, but I think we need to go forward and I think we need to get sharper.

“I was rusty, and the team was a little rusty, but we got a ‘W’ and that’s the most important thing.”

Carmichael was pleased with how his team played on Saturday but said there is still room for improvement.

“I thought it was a great game,” Carmichael said. “I thought it was a great preseason game. TCU, I think, is a decent team; they are definitely talented, and I think they’ll have a good season.

“From our standpoint, we accomplished what we wanted to. We won the game, but we found about three or four things that we need to do better and we got a lot of people minutes that we needed to see. So, I think, for us it was mission accomplished.”

The Cowgirls will start their regular season schedule against Southern Methodist University on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Dallas.
