Dolly to help cool scorched Oklahoma earth

Published: July 29, 2008

(AP) — Remnants of Hurricane Dolly will provide some relief to parts of Oklahoma scorched by triple-digit temperatures, but the excessive heat isn’t going away for good.

The National Weather Service said opportunities for showers and thunderstorms will continue for the state on Tuesday, with northern areas of the state seeing the best chance. The tropical system has been moving farther inland since making landfall Wednesday and is now sweeping to the north and east.

On Monday, severe thunderstorms dropped rain on part of the drought-plagued Oklahoma Panhandle, and other storms brought storms to western and northern sections of the state. Farther south and east, the rain was having a hard time reaching the ground, forecasters said.

Temperatures were well above average, ranging from 85 degrees in Bartlesville to 109 degrees in Frederick and Lawton, according to the weather service. The high in Guymon, Muskogee and Tulsa reached 101 degrees and 105 degrees was reported in Oklahoma City and Clinton. Other triple-digit readings included 102 in Enid, McAlester, and Stillwater; 104 in Hobart; 106 in Guthrie and 107 in Altus.

Even with increasing clouds and a chance of precipitation statewide, temperatures will still be hot on Tuesday, ranging from the lower 90s in the Panhandle to the low 100s in southwestern Oklahoma.

Lows Tuesday night should dip into the 60s and 70s as a chance of precipitation continues. A heat advisory will remain in effect until 7 p.m. for McCurtain County.

Partly cloudy conditions are expected on Wednesday, but eastern Oklahoma will have the best shot at rain, according to the weather service. Highs in the lower 90s to around 103 are forecast.

By Thursday, slight chances will be confined to parts of central and eastern Oklahoma and daytime highs will climb into the upper 90s and low 100s, with the hottest weather in the southwest. Lows should again fall into the 60s and 70s.

The heat will continue on Friday and Saturday, with temperatures in the 90s and low 100s during the day and 60s and 70s overnight, forecasters said.
