Softball is a summer pastime that many adults in Stillwater enjoy.

Each summer, the players hit the softball fields for sunburns, bruises and dirt slides. What they come away with are smiles and rubbery legs.

Stillwater Parks, Events and Recreations hosts both men’s and co-ed summer softball leagues. Adult Sports Supervisor Barbara Bliss said the leagues are strictly recreational.

Bliss said teams are divided into about eight co-ed and men’s leagues after the two placement games are held in mid June. These sub-leagues have between five and 10 teams that play each other for the duration of the summer.

The games last for eight to nine weeks, from July 7 until the end of August, sometimes early September.

There are not many regulations for organizations to sign up, only a team fee and an entrance age of 16. The fee for men’s is $400 and co-ed is $275.

At the end of the summer, the two teams who place the highest in their league receive free T-shirts and plaques with their finishing place.

Dr. Aaron Sapp from the OSU Health Center said he had a good experience playing for the First Christian Church.

“I usually play center field, but probably like playing second base better,” Sapp said. He makes a point to mention the position he avoids however, “I’d really rather not play catcher. The bat seems to get awfully close to my head.

“Our team hasn’t played the last one or two years. Before that I have played two or three years in Stillwater.”

Although the First Christian Church has not played in the Stillwater summer softball league recently, that did not stop its team from winning both placement games.

This seasoned softball player brings a nice competition to recreational sports. Sapp’s enthusiasm mirrors what many of the softball players in the league feel.

“I just love the energy of being out on the ball field. I enjoy the surge of running the bases and the anxiety of waiting for a high fly ball,” Sapp said.

The softball games will be held throughout the summer at the fields on Airport Road. Come out and support your local businesses and organizations.
