Sounds of summer

Recent releases provide music for all listeners

Michael Bevers/O’Collegian

Charlotte Sometimes released her debut albm “Waves & The Both Of Us” this summer. Sometimes, as well as Coldplay, Cute Is What We Aim For, Death Cab For Cutie and E For Explosion, have released promising albums for easy summer listening.

Judging by the bands releasing CDs, this summer promises to be a good one.

Here are a few of what I think will be this summer’s musical front-runners.

Charlotte Sometimes

If you were to pry the bottle out of Amy Winhouse’s hands, you’d end up with Charlotte Sometimes.

Her debut album, “Waves & The Both Of Us,” is a masterpiece.

Sometimes provides 12 entertaining tracks that are uniform enough to flow, but not so uniform that they bore.

Coldplay

If Coldplay had started out writing songs like “Viva La Vida’s” “Violet Hill,” I would have been hooked from day No. 1.

It has taken me a long time to get into Coldplay, but “Viva La Vida” has finally convinced me Coldplay is worth the sacred memory space on my iPod.

“Viva” is decidedly edgier and Coldplay is decidedly more grown up on this release. It’s about time, gentlemen.

Cute Is What We Aim For

I can’t wait for Cute’s new CD, “Rotation.”

I was fortunate enough to catch them in concert in 2006, days before “The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch” release.

Judging from “Rotation’s” singles, the band’s sound has matured but has not departed too far from its original sound.

Thankfully, Cute has broken away from its Fall-Out-Boy-shaped mold.

Death Cab For Cutie

I marked my calendar months in advance for this release.

“Narrow Stairs” is the logical next step in Death Cab’s ever-evolving sound. It picks up where “Plans” left off.

“Stairs” is less airy than “Transatlanticism” and “Plans” and relies more on electronics.

Death Cab has created the perfect CD to cater to a mainstream audience.

E For Explosion

E For Explosion is my latest favorite.

It’s debut, “Reinventing The Heartbeat,” could be played back-to-back with The Killers’ “Hot Fuss” without the listener realizing a switch occurred.

For those who love electronica and 1980’s synth pop, E For Explosion is for you.
