SAN DIEGO (AP)— Three players with Oklahoma State ties concluded play on Sunday at the 108th U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.
Former All-American Hunter Mahan led the way for the Cowboy contingent, tying for 18th place with a 6-over 290 total. The McKinney, Texas, native began the final round tied for sixth place before carding a 75 on Sunday.
Mahan entered the fourth round seeking his first top 10 in the Open after firing a 2-under 69 on Saturday. However, he was only able to manage one birdie en route to his 4-over score on Sunday.
Competing in his 17th U.S. Open, Scott Verplank tied for 29th at 292 after posting his second consecutive 74.
Verplank got out of the gate quickly on Sunday, opening with a pair of birdies before finishing at 2-over par for the day.
Sophomore-to-be Rickie Fowler wrapped up his first career Open start in style with back-to-back birdies on the final two holes to get in with a 1-over 72. The Murrieta, Calif., native went out with an even-par 35 on his front nine that included three birdies before coming in with a 1-over 37 to finish tied for 60th place with a 13-over 297 total.
