With the Writer’s Guild of America strike halting episode production for countless shows, TV went through a 100-day dry patch.
Although contracts were signed and deals were made, primetime shows are on a newer, longer and more traditional hiatus—summer.
While favorites such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Lost” are being prepared for new seasons, there isn’t much going on in the tube during swimsuit season. However, new game shows and returning summer series will make an appearance to whet viewers’ appetites until fall.
ABC is welcoming the summer with two new game shows, “I Survived a Japanese Game Show” and “Wipeout.”
The first sends 10 American contestants to compete in zany and often confusing Japanese game shows. According to ABC, “The results and prizes will be on who best adapts to the Japanese Culture and challenges in each episode.”
The network’s other game show, “Wipeout,” will have 24 contestants compete in an oversized, extreme obstacle course. The competitors are vying for $50,000 and the title of Wipeout Champion.
The Food Network also has a reality/game show ready for summer. “The Next Food Network Star” has returned for a fourth season. The show’s finalists compete in various culinary challenges until one is left. The last chef standing wins their own show on the network.
Reality shows are not the only stars of this summer. Several drama series make a return, including the Sci Fi channel’s two highly rated series “Eureka” and “Stargate: Atlantis.”
For viewers with more realistic taste buds, TNT’s smash hit “The Closer” also returns this summer.
A handful of new game shows and some returning veterans are sure to make TV’s dry season a little more bearable.
