Democrats across the world holding their breath waiting to see who will be the nominee for president can finally take a breath. After six long months and many contests, Barack Obama has gained enough delegates to receive the nomination over Hillary Clinton.
The Associated Press has reported that Obama finished with 2,144 delegates; Clinton 1,919.5 Many political pundits and concerned citizens spent last evening on the edge of their seat anxiously awaiting an announcement. The afternoon dragged on and on as voters cast their ballots in Montana and South Dakota. Clinton took South Dakota while Obama picked up Montana. MSNBC streamed Obama’s speech live online and on television. Coincidentally (or not so coincidentally), he spoke from the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. which will house the 2008 Republican National Convention.
Obama spent a great portion of his rally praising the merits and strengths of Clinton. The door has been left open for Clinton to be on the ballot as Obama’s vice presidential running mate.
The senator from New York gave a brief speech in her home state that gave no indication to her next move.
Personally, I love both candidates. They appeal to different people for different reasons. The similarities between them are more numerous than their differences. Once they team up, I feel like they will be the Democratic Dream Team.
As we await the formal announcement, I suggest taking a moment to laugh at http://www.thingsyoungerthanmccain.com.
