Oklahoma State’s women’s golf team will return to action this week when it begins play at the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship in Albuquerque, N.M. The event will be held at UNM’s Championship Course and will get underway on Tuesday and conclude with Friday’s final round.

The Cowgirls, who are making their eighth-consecutive appearance in the event will begin play at 8:10 a.m. (MST) on Tuesday and will be paired with Texas A&M and Virginia. The trio will begin their second round on Wednesday at 12:20 p.m. local time. The field for the 72-hole event will consist of 24 teams and six individuals at the par-72, 6,424-yard layout.

OSU In NCAA Competition

The Cowgirls are competing in their eighth-consecutive NCAA Championship and are making their 17th appearance overall. OSU’s inaugural appearance was in the first-ever NCAA Women’s Golf Championship in 1982, when the Cowgirls finished third.

Oklahoma State has 10 top 10s at the tournament, and five top-five finishes. OSU’s best performance at the championship came in 2004 when the Cowgirls finished as national runner-up to UCLA in Opelika, Ala. OSU has two third-place finishes, first in 1982 and then again in 1989. In 2004, Karin Sjödin had the highest NCAA Championship finish by a Cowgirl individual as she finished second.

About The Course

This is the second time the UNM Championship Golf Course has hosted the NCAA women’s championship with 1987 being the other occasion. The University of New Mexico also hosted the NCAA men’s championships in 1976, 1992 and 1998.

In 1987, the Cowgirls finished sixth, carding a 1,203 total to come in 11 strokes behind fifth-place Miami. San Jose State won the event by one shot over Furman. Last fall, the venue hosted the NCAA Fall Preview, an event in which the Cowgirls tied for 10th place with Georgia.

NCAA Rewind … 2007 NCAA Championship

The Cowgirls finished tied for 14th place at the 2007 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships at the LPGA International Legends Course.

The 14th-place showing was an improvement over last year’s 18th-place finish in Laura Matthews’ first season as head coach of the Cowgirls. It also marked OSU’s seventh-consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships. OSU has finished in the top 15 in seven of the last nine national tournaments.

Karin Kinnerud led the Cowgirls for the second-straight season at nationals, finishing 21st individually. Pernilla Lindberg finished 50th, while Sarah Bradley finished 60th. Amanda Johnson tied Mallorie Underwood for 97th place.

What 2 Watch 4

OSU will also be in search of its fourth title of the 2007-08 season, which would be its highest total since winning four times during the 2000-01 campaign … freshman Jaclyn Sweeney enters the event riding a string of four consecutive top 10s, including her victory at the Big 12 Championship.
