This guitar is a type of logo for the NACURH conference coming to OSU May 16 - 19. The theme is “Rockin’ and Rollin’ Through Leadership: Take the Stage.”
Their goal is to empower students to step onto the stage of life, take the microphone and lead the world in one hell of a ballad.
And now, they need your help.
Members of OSU’s Residential Hall Association need about 200 volunteers to help host “Rockin’ and Rollin’ Through Leadership: Take the Stage,” a national residence hall conference May 16 through May 19.
About 2,000 students from across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Qatar will come to OSU for the 2008 National Association for College and University Residence Halls conference.
The event needs volunteers before, during and after the conference.
They will help with transportation, security, housing and a variety of other things.
But students won’t have to work the entire time at the conference.
They can attend any of the 300 sessions throughout the conference, said Amanda Mollet, NACURH adviser.
Sessions aren’t only about residential life but also about improving personal leadership skills and leading meetings effectively.
Volunteers can go to nightly entertainment.
Nancy Hunter Denney, author of “Zing! Your Life and Leadership” and other books, will speak about serving others for a greater social good.
Christopher Carter, a mentalist who performs hypnosis and other acts, will entertain the group during the conference.
Students will be able to sing karaoke with a live band May 16.
The next night, local bands will play for the group, and students can also entertain themselves with huge inflatables, a climbing wall and wax hands, Mollet said.
The conference provides an opportunity to meet people from all over the nation and world, Mollet said.
Volunteer co-director, Deleea Allcorn, said people she has talked with who attended past NACURH conferences described it as the highlight of their summers.
“They all describe it as their favorite conference they’ve gone to, something they’ve really, really enjoyed being a part of,” said Allcorn, a human development and family science junior.
Volunteers who don’t have a house or apartment in Stillwater will stay on campus, Allcorn said.
Students can volunteer for any amount of time, whether a day or the entire conference, she said.
Mollet said volunteer not only for the free T-shirt and food, but also for the chance to experience a conference that hasn’t been at OSU in 40 years.
“Other people are paying $250 to come and it’s right here in their backyard,” she said. “And it’s an awesome opportunity to experience it, meet some great people, have some fun and show the Oklahoma hospitality to people.”
