Through the windy, cold weather Sunday, freshman Jaclyn Sweeney achieved both of her goals for the weekend.
Sweeney won the Women’s Big 12 Championship Sunday with a 9-over, 225, at Karsten Creek.
Sweeney is the only freshman to win a Big 12 title.
“This was my goal coming into this tournament,” Sweeney said. “I’ve spent a lot of time on this course and on these greens especially. I wanted to win and I wanted our team to win.”
Sweeney finished four strokes ahead of junior teammate Karin Kinnerud and five strokes ahead of OSU junior Amanda Johnson who finished third.
“This is huge for her,” Kinnerud said. “I think she had that in mind coming into the tournament. I think we all had that in mind, I think we all had the ability to win it; but she has been a great contribution to the team.”
OSU won its sixth Big 12 Championship, finishing 27 strokes ahead of the field.
“We steamrolled the rest of the teams,” coach Laura Matthews said. “We are the premier team in the Big 12. They did what they were supposed to do and they won. I’m really proud of how our girls played this week.”
The Cowgirls had a big win this weekend and hope to build on it the rest of the season.
“If you look at our record we should win the NCAA Tournament,” Sweeney said. “I think that we just have to grow on this. We really grew together, I think, as a team just by winning this tournament. Hopefully we will win our next two tournaments.”
Matthews said she is confident in the next two tournaments and said OSU has a good chance of winning a national championship.
“We’ve won three tournaments now this spring, and I do believe we are good enough to win a national title,” Matthews said. “Everything just has to come together and the stars have to align. There is a little bit of luck involved to winning an NCAA Championship. I think if we play the way we can play, definitely, we can win.”
