Oklahoma State’s men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to College Station, Texas, this week for the 2008 Big 12 Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

First-round action will take place today through the finals Sunday.

The 20th-ranked Cowboys are 14-8 on the season with a 4-2 mark in the Big 12, while the 66th-ranked Cowgirls are 11-9 with a 5-6 conference record.

The Cowboys finished tied with Texas Tech for second place in the Big 12 standings, with each team going 4-2 in conference play, but a 4-3 win against the Red Raiders in the regular season gives OSU the No. 3 seed heading into College Station, while Tech will be the No. 4 seed.

The Cowboys will face the No. 6 seed, Oklahoma, at noon today.

The winning team will play either No. 2 seed Baylor or No. 7 seed Nebraska in a 9 a.m. match Friday.

Today’s match is this year’s second round of Bedlam.

The Cowboys hosted the Sooners in the regular season finale April 16. OSU won the match, 6-1, extending its series winning streak to 18.

With their 8-4 win against OU’s Andrei Daescu and Federico Chavarria, Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Nathan Byrnes completed a flawless Big 12 season at No. 1 doubles, going 6-0.

Nedovyesov continues to climb the individual rankings as he checks in as the third-ranked player in the country in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls.

Nedovyesov cracked the top five last week when he was ranked fifth. He finished the regular season with a 5-1 conference mark.

A sophomore from Alushta, Ukraine, Nedovyesov also finds himself at No. 17 in the doubles after he and Byrnes clinched the regular season Big 12 title at No. 1 last week.

The Cowboys maintained their position at 20 in the team rankings. Senior Ivan Puchkarov is 67 in the individual rankings.

The Cowgirls began the conference season with a four-match losing streak, but they regained their footing, winning five of their past seven matches.

Their 5-6 Big 12 record earns them the No. 6 seed in the conference championships.

They will face No. 11 seed Missouri in a 1:30 p.m. match today, with the winner facing No. 3 seed Texas A&M at 6 p.m. Friday.

Today’s match will be a familiar scenario as OSU and Missouri clashed in Stillwater on Friday.

Conditions were poor, and the teams had to fight through high winds throughout the match.

The Cowgirls came out victorious, winning 5-2.

After playing nine of their final 14 matches in Stillwater, the Cowgirls will look to regain their footing away from home. OSU is 6-5 on the year in matches away from DeBois Tennis Complex.

The Cowgirls are No. 66 in the country, according the ITA Rankings, heading into the Big 12 Tournament.
