Face it: For many college students, the kitchen is just a dirty room where the microwave lives.
Sure, they might boil the occasional noodle or scramble some eggs when feeling especially industrious, but chances are, most don’t spend enough quality time with the oven.
So, anyone whose idea of gourmet cuisine is Ramen with hot dog chunks should do him or herself a favor and check out OneBeerMeals.com for easy and impressive recipes that can be prepared in the time it takes to drink a beer.
Although some may disagree on the “appropriate” pace to drink a beer, there’s no denying that the dishes at OneBeerMeals are simple, delicious and pretty darn quick.
Visitors to the Web site will find recipes and step-by-step text instructions accompanied by how-to videos to help them soldier on through their potato lasagna, even when they’ve already put more than one can in the trash.
But OneBeerMeals isn’t just about the food: Skip over to “Bar Tips” for drink recipes, toasts, trivia and bar tricks sure to astonish drunks and 4-year-olds alike.
And whose grace shall deliver unto malnourished students the bounty of savory chicken alfredo, steamy meat-stuffed potatoes and tender chicken dippers to replace whatever the heck they’re eating now? Tony Lewis and Josh James share that noble distinction; both are 2007 business administration graduates of Drury University.
OneBeerMeals began as a project assigned to them during their internship with Turover Straus Marketing Innovations in Springfield, Mo.
“[Senior partners] Tim and Chris only told us that their idea was that they wanted college guys to cook and that they felt there was interest in this college niche,” Lewis said.
For this project, he had to brush up on more than his Web design skills.
“To be honest, I had no idea how to cook a damn thing,” he mused.
Thus, even the most culinarily illiterate may take heart: OneBeerMeals will make a cook out of anyone, even if they couldn’t pick a spatula out of a line-up.
However, assurances of safety cannot be made with such certainty, Lewis said.
“I think at one time or another everyone has burned themselves on the set,” Lewis said. “When you get some beers in you and try to act smooth on camera, something is bound to happen.”
True strangers to the stove may do well to stop by the “Cooking Tips” page for a list of the essential “tools of the trade” before cranking up the heat. This section is also full of simple wisdom, including priceless tips to make clean-up less of a buzz-kill. For example, sprinkling salt on food spills in the oven will reduce smoke and make cleaning much easier. Students should remember that when Mom asks what they’ve been learning.
And speaking of everyone’s moms, nothing excites the girls like a man who’s confident in the kitchen.
“It’s a nice skill to have with the ladies,” Lewis agreed. “With all the skills that I have learned in the kitchen, I make all my meals now.”
Finals only last a week and then they’re over, but the arts of cooking and mixing the perfect martini are essential skills for survival. Prioritize accordingly. Happy cooking and happy drinking.
