SGA attention overshadows largest group

Published: April 23, 2008

Lately the opinion page has had quite a bit of bickering about Student Government Association. All this press really just overshadows the successes of other campus organizations.

While the O’Colly has focused continually on the iniquities and the inanities of SGA, a group of motivated students have been planning a national conference that will be hosted at OSU from May 16-19.

Last spring, leaders from OSU’s Residence Halls Association put together a bid to host the National Association of College and University Residence Halls (NACURH) conference.

After presenting an awesome bid and selecting the conference theme “Rockin’ and Rollin’ through Leadership: Take the Stage,” these leaders won the honor of hosting the NACURH conference.

Nearly 2,000 delegates from all around the nation as well as Canada and the Middle East nation of Qatar will come to Stillwater to take part in the conference.

NACURH is the largest student-run organization in the world and is divided into regional conferences and further into individual affiliate schools.

The purpose of the NACURH conference is to bring a diverse group of student leaders from residence halls together to share programming ideas and learn from each other.

For those who have never lived in the OSU residence halls, each hall tries to put on a weekly program.

This program can be social (e.g. a movie party) or more educational in nature (like a sexual education program). The examples I give are mundane but at the conference, unique program ideas are shared and also tips on how to make programs more successful.

Of course, it isn’t all business at NACURH. Numerous entertainment events have been planned and the delegates will certainly learn how awesome OSU is.

The lack of coverage concerning this event is disconcerting, but there are still ways that the OSU campus can get involved.

Volunteers are needed to help run many aspects of the conference. Compensation for volunteers is free room and board, as well as a rockin’ conference T-shirt. Visit http://www.nacurh08.com to find the volunteering contract and more information about the conference in general.

Volunteering for the NACURH conference offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to be behind the scenes at a national conference.

OSU students, faculty and staff are all invited to be a part of the conference. For many delegates this will be their first and perhaps only time visiting Oklahoma as well as OSU, so creating an outstanding conference is vital.

The conference staff has been working diligently toward that goal, and while the finer points may remain, enlisting the aid of volunteers is essential for success.

I urge everyone to check your calendars to see what you have going on from May 16 to 19. If you have time (even if for only part of the conference) and want to be a part of making the 2008 NACURH conference the best NACURH conference ever, please volunteer.

SGA isn’t the only student organization that affects the OSU campus. Numerous other organizations represent OSU and many of their successes go unreported. Nevertheless, it’s a great time to be a Cowboy. See you at NACURH.
