Cowgirl jersey No. 14 saw its last home game Tuesday night.
It certainly was bedlam Tuesday night in Cowgirl Stadium. Fans yelling back and forth, cheers from the fans in crimson and chants from the fans in orange. But an emotional Cowgirl’s family was sitting in the nearly full orange stadium seats.
Senior right-fielder Kim Kaye played in her last home game Tuesday night where OSU lost to No. 9 Oklahoma 3-1.
Kaye’s family traveled from San Diego to watch her play on senior weekend and decided to stay a few more days when they realized OSU would play Oklahoma (38-11, 11-2 Big 12) Tuesday night.
Kaye’s mother, Sue; her father, James; and her 4-year-old brother, Sam, were all waiting outside the locker room to meet Kaye after the game.
Sue Kaye didn’t get emotional until she realized Tuesday night was her daughter’s last home game.
“I hadn’t really thought about that,” Sue Kaye said.
Then there was a silent pause. James Kaye looked at Sue as her eyes started to water.
“It was emotional watching our daughter play her last home game at Cowgirl Stadium,” Sue Kaye said. “I’m a very proud mom. She works hard, gets good grades and does her job.”
Kaye’s father kept his composure, but there was emotion in his voice.
“It all went really fast; she had a great three years here,” James Kaye said. “You blink your eyes and it’s over. Kim has loved it here. It has been a great environment for her.”
Sam Kaye was shy when it came to talking about his sister’s game, but he said it was exciting watching Kim and the Cowgirls play Tuesday, and he did leave the Cowgirls with a “Go Pokes!”
Kim Kaye said she is trying not to think about it being her last home game.
“In the same way that you don’t want to think about your last at-bat; I’ve just had so many great memories,” Kaye said. “It was a great way to end it, I mean, I would have rather had a win, but I just have so many great memories when I think about every game that I’ve played at home.”
Although it was her last home game, Kaye and the Cowgirls (24-21, 7-6 Big 12) still have five regular season games left, including tonight’s game in Norman against Oklahoma at 7.
Kaye said she thinks tonight’s outcome will be different.
“There’s a storm coming to town,” Kaye said. “And that storm is saying ‘Yee-Haw Cowgirls!’”
