The escalators in the Student Union are turned off each evening after 5 p.m. because they use so much energy.
Mitch Hedberg said it best when he said escalators can never break. They can only temporarily become stairs.
The escalators in the Student Union become stairs every evening.
The escalators are turned off at night, said Mounzer Al-Harake, the assistant director of building operations at the Student Union.
“At night, we turn them off because they use a great amount of electricity,” Al-Harake said. “All of the offices in the building close at 5, so if there are not any functions going on in the building then the escalators are turned off.”
Al-Harake said if the escalators are off during the day, it’s not because they are broken.
“During the day, if they are off, it’s usually because of things students do while on them,” Al-Harake said. “There are certain safety features that can trigger an emergency stop function. Some people know what these are and do it.”
The escalators are normally in good working condition.
“For their age and how much they are used, they do not break down that much,” Al-Harake said. “During the day, I’d say nine out of 10 times they are off it is because of the emergency stop functions.
“If they do break, then we have people on campus who can take care of it.”
