Sophomore outfielder Katelyn Bright runs the bases. The Cowgirls host the Sooners tonight at 7 in a continuation of the teams’ April 2 game that officials called in the bottom of the 2nd because of rain.
The Cowgirls will be in an interesting predicament before the first pitch is thrown in today’s Bedlam game: they will already be trailing.
Oklahoma State enters the game behind 2-0 against Oklahoma. Today’s 7 p.m. matchup is a continuation of the April 2 Bedlam game that was stopped because of rain.
The Cowgirls and the Sooners played 1 1⁄2 innings before officials called the game. The Sooners scored two runs in the first inning to take the lead.
Although his team will be playing catch up with the Sooners, coach Rich Wieligman said the Cowgirls can deliver a strong comeback.
“We just gotta know we gotta battle,” Wieligman said. “We’ve got to do our best to hold them down and keep them to the two they have.”
Senior outfielder Kim Kaye said she is ready for the challenge OU brings. The Cowgirls are down by two, but it could have been more if it wasn’t for the Cowgirls making some strong defensive plays.
“We know what we have to do,” Kaye said. “OU, they’re a great hitting team. When you think back to that first inning, they hit the ball, but we also made plays.”
Not only will the Cowgirls be down 2-0 in the bottom of the second, but they will also already have one out. However, Wieligman said he is confident the team can get out from behind and play a tough game against the Sooners.
“We’re not out of it,” Wieligman said. “We’ve just got to keep them where they’re at and see if we can put some offense on the board.”
The Cowgirls (24-20, 7-5 Big 12) have won five of their past seven games, including a victory over No. 4 Texas A&M. Wieligman said the Cowgirls’ continued success can translate into good momentum in tonight’s game.
“We’ve been building this momentum,” Wieligman said. “Gradually, we’re just getting more and more confident with everything we’re doing out there.”
The Sooners (37-12, 10-2) are also winners of five of their past seven, with their two losses coming to Texas A&M.
This will be Kaye’s last outing at Cowgirl Stadium. She convinced her parents, who came to Stillwater for Senior Day on Sunday, to stay in town to watch the final game. Kaye said having her family there is exciting, and so is the prospect of playing OU for her final home game.
“I’m super excited,” Kaye said. “You couldn’t ask for a better finish.”
After having a game canceled in each of the past three weeks because of rain, the Cowgirls are hoping the weather holds off so they can finish Bedlam.
“The way Oklahoma weather is, you never know,” Wieligman said. “It changes hourly.”
