Festivals are chances for people to enjoy food, music, dancing and to experience a new culture.
The Calle Ocho Festival is a desirable destination for students not only because of its spicy dishes but also for its hot Latin dances.
The Calle Ocho Festival starts Saturday at 2 p.m. The Latin Dance and Culture Club at Oklahoma State University sponsors the festival, which will take place on 8th and Duck streets.
The LDCC offers an opportunity for students to dive into rich Latin American culture through dances, food, friends and events.
The LDCC is the club for students interested in dance and Latin American culture. Along with promoting social gatherings with Latin food and dances, the club organizes trips to local dance clubs and sponsors its members for choreography and performances. The LDCC offers an opportunity to taste the flavor of folklore and way of life of Latin American cultures.
The festival will feature performances from African drummers and Mexican Folklore performances starting at 5:30 p.m. and inflatable games for children and live music from an orchestra at 7 p.m.
Festival-goers will be able to learn salsa dancing at 4 p.m. from Oscar Martinez, a dance instructor from Houston.
“If you have ever thought about learning, Saturday is the day,” according to the press release. “No experience needed and two left feet are perfect.”
Son Venezuela will perform at 7 p.m. This award-winning orchestra from Kansas City will play Cuban music until 10 p.m.
Students said they go to the different festivals at OSU to taste exotic dishes.
Laura Valentino, a biology junior, said she likes arepas, a popular Latin dish.
Katy Kenslow, a marketing and Spanish senior, said that she plans to attend the festival.
Kenslow said she would like to see all the traditional Hispanic dishes at the festival, but her personal favorite is fried plantains and gallo pinto, a traditional Costa Rican dish.
Samuel Stropes, an architecture freshman, said that he had attended the LDCC’s Salsa and Tango dances.
Stropes said the events were fun and well-organized and he highly encourages students to attend.
