SGA is taking 120 underprivileged children from Oklahoma City and Tulsa to the Cowgirl softball game on Saturday through the “Take a Kid to the Game” program.
President Michael Warren said “Take a Kid to the Game” is a program that enables young people to attend collegiate athletic events they otherwise would not be able to attend.
The children attending will receive a ticket to the game, a shirt, a meal and transportation, Warren said. Warren said this is the second semester in a row SGA has sponsored the event.
“Take a Kid to the Game” Chairwoman Jennifer Moore said after the conclusion of a pre-game cookout, volunteers will walk the kids to Cowgirl Stadium. The cost of the event is a little more than $2,000, she said.
Moore said she likes that the program gives kids something they otherwise wouldn’t be able to enjoy because of the cost while exposing them to a college environment at the same time.
Programs like “Take a Kid to the Game” are critical in motivating underprivileged youth to perform better in school and go to college when they are older, Moore said.
“Also, ‘Take a Kid to the Game’ allows OSU students to give back to the community and make a difference in these kids’ lives,” she said. “We did it last semester, and the kids really appreciated the fact that we gave up our free time to be with them.”
The program has existed for 13 years, according to the program’s Web site, http://www.takg.com. Institutions can participate by signing up online and selecting an official game for the event to take place, according to the site.
