The M.L. Freshman EP succeeds in developing a unique, multilayered sound listeners will sing all day.

Close-minded radio metal lovers need not read.

If bigger meant better in music, then Green Day’s extremely hyped up “American Idiot” would be one of the greatest albums taking up space on an iPod, and The Morning Light’s “The Sound of Love EP” would only be worth the pennies in your pocket.

Music lovers can be thankful that this isn’t true.

Pittsburgh’s very own indie/pop band, The Morning Light, dropped it’s debut album, “The Sounds of Love EP” in March.

In six songs, The Morning Light establishes a unique multilayered sound.

Armed with the unusual use of a piano, two great vocalists, a tambourine and the occasional handclap along with more traditional indie instruments, The Morning Light creates a one-of-a-kind harmony that you’ll be repeating all day.

Comparing this young group’s music to anyone else’s is hard.

The EP sounds like a mix of The Shin’s inventive instrumentals and The Format’s creative pop lyrics; however, that comparison doesn’t do justice to their sound.

From start to finish, The Morning Light ipresents constant music. It is original, catchy and, most importantly, just good music.

Unlike many albums released today, it’s an extremely upbeat group of tracks that accurately represent the beauty in life.

If you are not man enough to accept the use of a tambourine on “Clouds”, then move on to something along the lines of Disturbed or the countless other clone bands on iTunes, but good luck finding the originality and creativity The Morning Light possess.

Even though “The Sound of Love EP” is only six songs, all of them are quality music, and “A Safe Bet” and “The Sounds” are single downloads.

The Morning Light successfully digs it’s roots into the indie scene while standing out. The dual vocals that makes the band exceptional and different.

The fact that both singers are able to hit the higher notes without straining their voices or their tone is a rare feat not accomplished by many vocalists in today’s indie scene.

The real questions is, “Will they top this or hit a sophomore slump?”

The Morning Light band members are great live, humble in person, and if you are a fan of good music, you need to hear or see them for yourself.

Verdict:

There are not many better ways to spend $3.99 or about 20 minutes. The only downside is that it’s an EP and not an album.
