The Cowgirl softball team saw its five-game winning streak end Sunday with a loss to Texas.
Today OSU (19-18) will look to start a new streak when it faces off against the Central Arkansas Bears at 7 p.m. in Cowgirl Stadium.
The Bears have struggled all year, coming into today’s game with a 2-31 record and a 23-game losing streak. Assistant coach Matt Meuchel said no team should be overlooked, despite its record.
“They’re a scrappy team,” Meuchel said. “They played us a tough one-run ball game last year. Anybody at this level, if you don’t bring your A-game on that given day, is capable of really putting up a good fight and winning the game at the end.”
The Cowgirls feel they have an opportunity to bounce back against a struggling nonconference opponent.
“We’re anxious to play,” Meuchel said. “We feel like we’re preparing well. I think we feel like we’re playing well.”
The Cowgirls are 5-1 in their past six games, all Big 12 matchups. Along with today’s game, the Cowgirls will face a nonconference opponent tomorrow, Wichita State.
After playing with so much intensity in their Big 12 games, the Cowgirls may be tempted to look past their upcoming opponents. However, Meuchel said the team will play with the same focus it has been in conference play.
“I think they’ll keep the same focus,” Meuchel said. “That’s one of the things we’ve been working on the hardest is just trying to prepare for each game the same way, and I think we’ve reached a point where we’ve become really good at our preparation.
“I don’t think there is going to be any fall off.”
If the Cowgirls come out with the same intensity and desire they have shown in Big 12 play, they may get some good momentum going back into conference play this weekend against Iowa State.
“It would be nice momentum carrying into the weekend,” Meuchel said. “I think it will be huge for us to continue to play well as a team together.”
The Cowgirls have control over how much energy they come out with, the focus they go out on the field with and how fundamentally sound they play. One thing the Cowgirls do not have control over that has proved to be a problem lately is the weather.
In last week’s Bedlam matchup, rain caused the game to be suspended after 1 1⁄2 innings of play. The beginning of this week has also been rainy, which has the Cowgirls wishing for good weather.
“We hope it’s good,” Meuchel said. “It’s been a little bit tough these past couple of days with the weather and last week, mid week.”
