Dear Editor,
Often arguments are based on differing definitions of words or ideas, and we can avoid arguments by clearly defining words and ideas.
I have noticed in my years inside the Student Government Association that there are two definitions of what SGA is, and it is my belief that this causes problems.
On the one hand, SGA is an organization with the ability to provide valuable leadership experience to students while offering the entire campus multiple venues for service and fun.
On the other, SGA is a political science club that offers six-hour-long meetings filled with heated debate and various ambitious maneuvers.
Both can be a lot of fun for those who take part, but only one is beneficial to OSU as a whole.
Next week, a referendum will be held asking students to vote on a potential name change for SGA. I urge students to vote ‘yes.’
A new name for the organization would more accurately reflect what a Student Association’s purpose truly is — to represent the students.
The new name would be OSSA, the Oklahoma State Student Association.
The word Government would be literally taken out of the title, and the politics that this word conveys would hopefully leave as well.
The change would additionally be as practical as it is philosophical, as the Student Government Association doesn’t really govern anything at all anyway.
Changing the name will not solve all the problems overnight, but it is a step in the right direction.
The current President and his team have done much to combat the useless politics of the organization, not only by speaking out against foolish habits and traditions, but by beginning service programs open to the entire student body such as Tailgate Recycling and Take a Kid to the Game.
Help continue this effort to build a Student Association at OSU that all can be proud to be a part of.
Trevor Sharon, SGA treasurer
