Sinkane’s “Color Voice” is an album for listeners who enjoy albums as a whole. This sophomore album has a tribal, jazz sound.
Sinkane to perform at Third Place to celebrate second album debut
With only four tracks, Sinkane’s latest album, “Color Voice,” accomplishes more than most bands accomplish in a decadelong discography.
“Color Voice” is Sinkane’s second album and first for Columbia, Mo., record label Emergency Umbrella Records.
Sinkane is Ahmed Gallab’s solo project, which he wrote and recorded virtually by himself.
The album contains few vocals while the majority of the music is like a journey around the globe.
Gallab uses sounds found in several ethnic pockets and adds a tribal, jazz-rock flair to it to create a unique and enjoyable listen.
Intense drum fills are the first sounds that stand out until horns fill the speakers and take you back to a time when Miles Davis or John Coltrane played.
Upon first listen, the jazz and tribal influences are most noticeable.
However, Gallab finds room to sneak in intricate guitar fills that closely resemble the instrumental rock band, Explosions in the Sky.
As each song flows into the next, “Color Voice” seems never to end and forces the whole work to be listened to at once rather than picking and choosing tracks.
Sinkane is definitely a band for anyone who listens to albums as a whole.
The comparisons keep mounting as the album continues to move from place to place, but that is the genius of Sinkane.
No single reference can describe the pure brilliance of “Color Voice.”
It is a collection of music that borrows from so many styles and so many projects that it is ultimately one of the best original pieces of music I have listened to while also being one of the most complicated pieces of music I have listened to.
With influences such as Medeski, Martin and Wood, Drums and Tuba, Yo La Tengo, Explosions In The Sky, Miles Davis, Caribou and John Coltrane, Sinkane delivers one of the best records of 2008 so far.
I urge fans of jazz, rock or Afrobeat music to seek this record out.
With digital download, CD and colored picture disc vinyl available, “Color Voice” could be the best music buy of the year.
“Color Voice” does not come out until May 6.
Sinkane is performing Friday night at The Third Place on The Strip.
KXZY is sponsoring the all-ages show.
The cost is $3 at the door , and the show starts at 8.
The verdict:
To be taken as a whole
