The classic Seuss story of Horton the elephant came to life last weekend. The movie follows the plot of the book, although a few things were added for filler

‘Horton’ entertains children and adults alike

Published: March 25, 2008

“Horton Hears a Who” takes the old Seuss classic, pimps it out and splatters it on the big screen.

This is wonderful for kids dazzled by many colors, but not as pleasant for adults who know the Seuss stories back and forth.

The basic plot of “Horton” stays true to the book, however to make it into a decent movie, more was added for filler.

For example, there is an anime inspired sequence where Horton is a ninja and the clover which houses the infamous speck has a ridiculous smile on its face and the lips don’t match the sound.

For those who don’t know the story, here it is as told by the movie. Horton (the voice of Jim Carrey) is an elephant who lives in the jungle of Nool, and is fairly popular amongst the animals except the overbearing kangaroo who takes it upon herself to run the jungle.

So when Horton hears a speck yell for help, those he tells think he’s crazy. But he isn’t; on the speck is the town of Whoville and Horton gets to know the mayor (voice of Steve Carell).

The problem is that only Horton can hear the citizens of Whoville, which poses a problem when the kangaroo gathers the citizens of Nool to take and destroy the clover and speck with which Horton has become inseparable.

So Horton goes on this adventure trying to find a safe home for the speck and the citizens of Whoville.

It was nice to see that this rendition of one of Seuss’ tales was not littered with fart jokes and childish humor nor does it have the secret sexual innuendos that only older audiences understand. As an “adult” I was laughing almost as much as the kids.

One of my favorite characters was a student of Horton’s named Katie who is very special. She steals every scene she is in.

In one scene she describes the world that she has on her clover, because the kids want to have a speck world just like Horton.

She says that in her world everyone has ponies and they eat rainbows and poop butterflies, then she slowly backs into the bush behind her while making an ominous sound. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.

However, despite the random tangents the movie sometimes takes, “Horton” provides a great story and a sweet outcome.

The message was to keep promises; “I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. An elephant’s faithful 100 percent.”

And everyone, no matter how big or small, deserves to be treated fairly.

This movie is enjoyable at parts for those who want to take sons, daughters, nieces, nephews or any child.

However, for those who are just curious, save the money and see it when it comes to the Student Union or DVD.

The verdict:

“Fun for the kids and interesting enough that adults won’t want to kill themselves.”
