Junior outfielder Breana Casaus extended her hitting streak to seven games while helping the Cowgirls go 3-1 in the Mizuno Classic this weekend. She also scored a run in OSU’s 5-1 win against Centenary on Sunday.
The Cowgirls defeated Centenary 5-1 and Stephen F. Austin 5-1 to end the Mizuno Classic on a high note and improve to 13-11 on the season.
In the first game of the day for the Cowgirls (13-11), they faced Centenary for the third time this season. Like the previous two meetings, the Cowgirls finished victoriously.
The Ladies scored their only run in the second inning from an RBI-single by right-fielder Amy Wiedeman. The Cowgirl pitching staff would hold Centenary to just two more hits in the game.
The Cowgirls didn’t score until the fifth inning when junior Breana Casaus led off the inning with a hit to extend her streak to seven games. She scored from third on a passed ball and sophomore Katelyn Bright scored from third on sophomore Megan Castle’s sacrifice fly to right field.
OSU scored three more runs in the sixth when sophomore Sam Heinlein hit her second double of the season to score junior Heather Kim.
Junior Jessica Meza and Casaus, who pinch-ran for Heinlein, scored when freshman Mariah Gearhart hit a double down the left field line to make the final score 5-1.
Freshman Sarah Odom started in the circle for the Cowgirls and threw four innings, gave up five hits for one run and struck out four.
However, sophomore Anna Whiddon picked up the win as she came in for relief in the fifth. Whiddon struck out three and gave up only one hit as she picked up her first win of the season and is now 1-2.
The second Cowgirl game of the day ended 5-1. OSU faced Stephen F. Austin again as the No. 2 team versus the No. 1 team in the tournament. The Cowgirls scored first and never gave up the lead.
Freshman Alysia Hamilton and Kim started the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs. Two more Cowgirl hits and Gearhart’s sacrifice fly to score junior Kati Phillips kept the inning alive.
The Ladyjacks’ lone run came from third baseman Briana Bishop’s RBI-single to right field.
Cowgirl freshman Amanda Crabtree threw her second complete game in two days and picked up the win against Stephen F. Austin. She finished the game with 12 strikeouts and three walks and is now 7-7.
The Cowgirls play the University of Tulsa at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium on Wednesday.
Oklahoma State run-ruled Texas Wesleyan in its first game Saturday and fell 1-0 to Stephen F. Austin in its second.
Crabtree threw a one-hitter as the Cowgirls defeated Texas Wesleyan 9-0 in five innings.
The Cowgirls had 12 hits in the game including two from Gearhart, who had three RBIs. Castle had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
Heinlein had two RBIs and reached base in all three of her at-bats.
Casaus extended her hitting streak to five games as she went 2-for-3 at the plate and hit in a run. Texas Wesleyan’s single hit came from first baseman, Brooke McNabb.
Crabtree threw all five innings and struck out seven. Texas Wesleyan’s starting pitcher, Rayne Reynolds, got the loss and fell to 1-4.
In the second game, the Cowgirls couldn’t find a way to score. OSU tallied seven hits in the game and left seven runners on base.
The Ladyjacks scored the game’s run on a solo home run by their designated player, Kari Hugie.
Whiddon threw a complete game for the Cowgirls. She gave up three hits for one run and struck out nine while walking one.
