The OSU golf team is back from Puerto Rico.
And it brought a souvenir.
The team brought back a second place trophy, finishing behind No. 2 Alabama this weekend at the Puerto Rico Classic while placing ahead of No. 1 Georgia, which finished third.
Freshman Rickie Fowler finished second individually and was a big part of this success.
“I felt like I played well individually,” Fowler said. “I think we as a team probably could have played a little better, I know I had a few hick-ups in a few rounds, I think my swing went on vacation there for a while.”
Fowler is the No. 1 golfer in the nation.
The Cowboys were only two strokes back going into the final round but ended up losing by three strokes.
Junior Trent Leon said the team played well over all, but that they need to work on playing well on the final holes.
“None of us finished the way we needed to,” Leon said. “Especially me.”
Leon did have some positive notes on the tournament.
“It was good to get out and compete again,” Leon said. “It was nice to show everyone that we are one of the best teams in the country.”
Coach Mike McGraw said the team did very well in the tournament despite the tough competition.
The Cowboys lost six strokes in the final holes of the tournament to lose by three, but McGraw said he saw several positives come out of the tournament.
“A lot of good things happened this week, McGraw said. “I can’t imagine a better ball striking round than what Kevin Tway had on Sunday. Rickie also had a great round and I think we are a better team now than we were going into this tournament.”
McGraw said there are some things the team can improve on for the next tournament.
“We are going to have to continue to work on our short game,” McGraw said. “Whatever we can do to build confidence in our players, so that when they are in that position they can finish the round.”
The fourth rank golf team will be golfing in its second tournament of the spring in the Las Vegas Collegiate beginning Friday.
